Hi everyone,
I bought a new 870 Express Super Magnum about a month ago or so. I went to try it out a few weeks after buying it using Number 8 shot, 2 3/4 inch, Winchester Universal ammo.

Well every 2-3 shots they'd get stuck in the chamber and would require the hulk to pump the slide in order for it to eject, or take the barrel out and clear it with a rod.

I did some google searching and there's been reports of the particular ammunition not functioning well in 870's. I've tried 4-5 different types of ammo since then and it's worked without a hiccup.

So what I'm looking for is some feedback from 870 owners (all models) using the Winchester Ammunition. Did you have similar issues? Do they go away as the chamber wears out with use?

Thanks

Its the ammunition, its absolute garbage, it literally jams up all shotguns Ive ever ran this ammo through, I avoid it at all costs now :D

Ive never had any issues with anything Federal offers, all my shotguns will devour anything that they offer with no issues to this day...

Remington 870 + Winchester Universal = TWK

Yup hes right none of my shotguns like em eighter i just buy the federal target loads their cheaper too i think

I have found the ammo is allright to shoot, the hulls arent the greatest. The steel basses swell and stick in tighter or new chambers. Some polishing helps this if you are wanting to spend a little time to even it out, they usually work fine after that. A flex hone or similar to brighten up the chamber.

Have you tried them in your Supernova? Mine eats them up like candy, both mine and my friends Maverick 88s love em too. Maybe its just a Remlin thing

I had the odd hiccup with the SuperNova, but yes I have to agree with you it was probably the best shotgun for them; it could be an 870 thing, possibly their chamber dimensions reacting with the expanding steel hulls perhaps as mentioned earlier, the ValtroPM5 I havent done a thorough run through enough with them too see if its good to go, and the 11-87... well thats just a write off all together with these Winny rounds, which Im really not to worried about as theres better quality ammo out there to begin with! :D:D:D

Exact same problem with wincheser in my 870. I ran thousands of rounds of federal through with not 1 issue. Then I bought a case of winchester on sale. Nothing but jams exactly as you described. I even polished my chamber, but that didn't help either. Went back to federal and not a single issue. Just stick with the federal and you'll be happy as a clam.

I dont know what kind of deals the rest of the country gets but locally I can usually grab a 250 rd case of Top Gun for $60 which is cheaper than buying Win Universal. So if the Win shells give you attitude, shop around for cases of Top Gun. Its good Federal ammo, my father does very well shooting trap with it.

Yup that's what I always use. One time the wincheser was on sale for $5 cheaper so I grabbed a case.... and that's when the trouble started.

My 870 express jams with ALL low brass loads, Winchester, Federal, even an old box of mastercraft ammo jammed, the exact same jam you've described. The cheap Winchester ammo is definitely crap, but I don't think that the 870 chamber is helping either, since I can shoot Winchester shells in my other shotguns.

Time for a polish Id say

The only jams I've had were from the cheap winchester's.
A couple guys on here told me about the chamber being rough, and that being the reason why they jam.
I haven't polished mine because it feels like glass inside. I don't think steel can get any smoother than it already is.
As long as I don't buy winchester universal shells, my 870 cycles just fine.

problem solved.

Deburr/polish you chamber or buy better ammo. Winchester Universal is garbage, my Baikal HATED it until it was well broken in.
