Hi I am getting an 870 for christmas, I Duck/goose hunt, would it effect my hunting if i were to put some "tactical" stuff on, like mag ectension, Mag lite, shell holder, heat sheild, fiber optic . I was originally going to get a 28 in barell, but maybe go for a 26 ich instead to make up for the extra weight? If anyone has their 2 Cents it would be very appriecated!!

An 18" cylinder choked gun would be not ideal for a duck blind. But barrels come off easily and can be replaced as circumstances require, same with a magazine extension and whatever other tactical goodies you want to install.

But the best course of action is to have TWO 870s; one tactical, the other not.

If you go the short barrel route for the fun and games, then pickup a goose barrel on ee for a good price your set.On the mag extension Remember the 3 shot rule for waterfowl, gonna have to make a wood plug, or buy one :)

The heat shield can be put on a 18 in. barrel and left there, it stays with the barrel when the barrel comes off . The extension can be replaced with the normal mag cap when you change from short to long barrel, just remember the 2 shot mag capacity limit for Migratory Birds.

Hanging all that stuff off a 26"-28" barrel is like trying to turn a pickup into a street racer. And personally, I find that the tactical widgets would just detract from a hunting gun; there's no point putting a mag extension on something you're going to have to plug down to two rounds anyhow, and a longer barrel just seems to swing and point a little nicer to me somehow. Adding weight that far out front would probably mess up the balance.

I'd suggest that you do what I did and get two 870's: one for hunting and one for tacticoolizing/range blasting/rooney gunning.
