Has anyone been shooting the hornady 87 gr Vmax out around a thou? I am wanting to try some in my 243 but I am wondering if they are a little light to buck the wind out there. I have been shooting 105 amaxes but just finished my box and figure I should try something else for comparision. I would aso like to try the 95 gr smk but they seam to be a liitle hard to come by... any imput would be awsome

In my 6BR the 87 g Vmax is a good bullet. It gets kicked around out at 1000 and I found the 90 g Scenar to be the better bullet at all ranges to 1000. Couldn't shoot 105 Amax because my rifle has the wrong twist for them. Would choose the 105 Amax over the 87's and expect them to do better though. Shot many of them through my 6mm Remington.

my 243 twist is boarderline for the 105's as-well. it is a savage so it is 9.25 they seem to shoot ok (.5MOA to 1MOA) to 300 consistantly but they are the only bullets I have tried so I figured I should try something else. I have 15 or so sierra 85gr bthps loaded to try but they are so short comapred to the big 105's

I know a Savage 243 owner that did very well with the 87gr Vmax and 90gr Scenars to 1000m. The 105 Amax would not stabilize in his pipe so you are lucky. He was getting some amazing accuracy at shorter distances.

I would think 1/2 to 3/4 MOA at 1000yds would be superb performance for a factory Savage. Many shoot 1/2 min at shorter distances so they are very capable out of the box.

Best 6mm

I shoot a 243WSSM with the 90gr scenar bullets. These bullets are about the best if you don't have a fast twist in your rifle.I regularely shoot out to 1000yds with this bullet and have know problems. My load is a 210m primer,WIN case,90gr scenar bullet,44grs of H4350.This little number is pushing about 3250fps.At 1000yrds I have a 28 MOA drop.

Right. I think the 105 g Amax calls for a 1 in 9 twist. It wouldn't surprise me if your rifle did shoot them though. My 6 mm shot them well with 1 in 8 twist in a custom built barrel. It took quite awhile for me to run into a rifle that simply wouldn't shoot them. This particular 6 BR I am playing around with right now is one of them. I've measured the twist to be 1 in 10 and when you shoot the 105's through it they will actually go off paper at 100 meters. Darnedest thing you ever saw. The bullets keyhole too.

How much help do you think you get from the high velocity? I am just starting to build a rifle along the line of mystic player's in 6.5 mm. I liked the 6 mm bullets, but feel the 6.5 will give me a bit of an edge out there. fred

Im going to give the Vmaxes a go and see what happens, I always have the option of going back to the 105s because they will shoot, I am just always looking for better. I want this to be a Precision rig and .5-1 moa is not precision, it is good, but it has to be better.

Let us know what happens. Should be interesting, can't really tell until you try. I have ordered a whole whack of the 90 g Scenars and wouldn't mind sending you 20 or 25 if you aren't satisfied wih the Vmax and wanted to try them before taking the big plunge. fred

i am in the process of trying the 95 smk's in my rem 243 and things don't look good. they aren't keyholing the paper but groups are in the order of 2". it is an accurate rifle with other loads so i am thinking the 95 is a little too long. my speeds are just over 2900 as well....extra info for those that care.

what twist rate? they are supposed to be for at least a 9 twist

Wow Fred thanks for the offer, I will for sure keep everyone posted on what I find. where do you order your lapua products from? you can pm me if you don't want to plug them. just incase they are the ticket

it is just a factory rem barrel , i think they are 9 1/4. but i thought i might get em to work with enough speed....apparently not. i may try pushing more powder behind em, maybe the little extra will make the difference. will have to be later though, my new toy will be here either thurs or friday and that will consume my life untill i get it on paper at 1000. (28" krieger barrelled 280AI )

I ordered from Hirsch Precision, but got a special deal from a U.S. supplier through and importer before I found out about Hirsch. It is the special deal I am waiting for right now. Found Hirsch good to deal with. Peter posts here. I really like the 90 grain Scenar bullet. Fred

Last week at 900 yds myself and a friend here were both shooting 6BR's, his is a shorter barrell with 1-10" tw he shoots the 87's. Mine is 30" 1-8" and i'm shooting 107 SMK's , with the nasty gusts up to and above 20mph I was being pushed 6-8" either side of the bull , we were shooting at target 24, HIS first three shots were hitting the berm between targets 25and 26 during the bad wind and going above 23 during a switch in wind, he finally gave up trying to get/stay on page.
It was educational, I never would have thought 20gr's of bullet would make such a huge difference. In comparison my other buddy with us was using a win. short mag. and 140 gr. bullets and he was dancing around the bull easily.

Kind of a nice natural experiment in some ways. Confirms some of the experiences I have had going down to shoot with Mystic Player once in awhile. I'm going to move to the 6.5 mm and a 140 grain bullet for the reason you're talking about here. fred
