8mm Mauser Ammunition

Nice find. Nice price for PPs. I'd buy them just for the nice Winchester brass.

I think I'll buy a case and do some re-load dev with them.

Is there a way find out what powder Winchester uses?

If you are shooting it in a strong 98 action or equivalent, you can load quite a bit hotter than the factory winchester will be. All the north american manufactured 8mm is loaded to 35,000cup in defence that somone may fire it in the older .318 bore. You can safely load a 170g bullet to 2700-2800fps in the 98 action. That winchester stuff will be running 2300-2400fps or less.

Yup, thus the reloading. The NA hunting loads leave lot's to be desired, at their 30-30ish pressures. I reload for a German K98K and a Zastava M48 which are JS and can take a proper charge (about 50K for the 7.92x57JS, off the top of my head).

I've been shooting lots of berdan surplus, have dies/bullets, but very little boxer brass.

I'd like to work up a 'proper' 8mm hunting load. That's a great price for the Winchester ammo. I'm wondering if it would be possible to salvage the pulled powder. Is there a way of determining exactly what they use?

My Mausers want more velocity.
