The old Mauser surprised me today after running some handloads over the chrony.
The 195 grain Hornady loaded with 46 grains IMR 4895 clocked 2491 fps.....
The 220 grain Sierra's loaded with 45 grains of H4895 clocked in at 2487 fps..
Rifle is a postwar Brno in full military wood with the original sights. I got 8 shots under 2 inches at 50 yards,I think that will be ok to hunt with it.:dancingbanana:
Thanks to hs4570 for the chrony results........

I found some old 35 Whelen chrony data to compare to the 8mm....
225 Speer
52 grains IMR 4895
2412 fps

I have nothing but respect for the 8x57. While my rifle is a modern, commercial action, I have been impressed at the velocities possible with various bullets using the right powders. I have exceeded 2800 with the 175's & 180's using Vihtavuori N550 & N150. N550 has also given 2600+ with the 195 Hornady, 200 Accubond and 200 Partition. All these will shoot around 1-1¼" at 100 meters. I have shot a couple of moose [125 meters and 260 meters] and a big black bear [75 meters] with mine. All died right there, and I have yet to recover a bullet. Regards, Eagleye.

I checked Norma's website and their velocity for the 196 grainer is 2562 fps, I got pretty close with my first handloads getting 2491 fps.:dancingbanana:
This load is very accurate and should flop'em pretty good..........

I've got a Turk rifle cut down to a carbine and with a 20" pipe I was only getting 2350 fps with the Norma 196 grain factory load...And it works just fine!

If you get an extra 100 fps plus over what I do...you ain't gonna have any problems at all!

Worked up to 2670 fps last Weekend.

Sierra 175 Grain SPT - IMR 4064 . I would like to get a hold of some of those Vihtavuori powders like N150 to see what kind of velocity I can work up to.

Looks that Model 98 is gonna need a better recoil pad. My old man's is not enjoying the recoil with that Hockey puck !

I got to buy a chrony. I reloaded using 195gr Hornady sp and 48gr H380. With my k98 I got 1-1 1/4 groupings open sight at 50m

when i had one, the norma 196 stuff ( which was really HOT, BTW) chorno'd at about 2800-had the "small" stock on it too, plus a recoil pad and it still kicked like a mule-the winchester factory 170 stuff wasn't near as bad
