Just got an S&K Scout mount for my k98 and have a Leupold FXII Scope coming as well.

-I hated the blade sights-

I don't hunt so looking for good target loads and want to start going for distance as well.

Any recomendations?
 
My 'one load fits all' for my 8mm rifles is 47 gr of IMR4064 behind a Hornady 195 gr bullet with Winchester brass. Ballistically, it is almost identical to the standard WW2 German round and is accurate. (MOA with 4X and 1.5x glass at 100M.)

I have gotten them from P&D before but they have been sold out for awhile. Online, Higginson's Powder stocks them as well and has them in stock right now.

The Hornady 170's you can get anywhere as well and are nice, accurate plinking rounds.
 
Not sure how well the S&K works yet but its very nicely built and easy to install.

And I couldn't butcher my k98 even if it is mismatched its too nice to drill and tap my 1939 code 42 receiver
 
Ok I just got given a whole bunch of 8mm stuff. Some of it is OLLLLLLLLD

How about Dominion brass thats primed?

Anyways what I have to work with is a full box of Hornady 170GR Round Nose

1 full box of Reminton P.S.P 185GR

2 full boxes of Speer 150GR SP

About 20 or so Sierra 175GR Spritzer

About 14 Norma 196GR SP

And I dont think I'll ever use them but a whole box of Hornady 220GR Spire points

I have the IMR 4064 as well

That sounds like a lot of assorted 8mm that I got from a guy at the last gun show here. Some heavy Hornady, some Speer, some Norma. Nice to try different stuff but it'll play havoc on the POA!!
I think you will like the Hornady 170's. I have gotten MOA with them and they are a good, cheap plinking round. ($21 per 100)
 
Its strange I dont know ANYONE in person who shoots 8mm.

With the 170grain Hornady how many grains of the 4064 would you recomend?

Need to build some hot loads for those 220's and see what sorta damage they can do.
 
The Mauser was build for the 196 grain bullets. The "Wehrmacht" ask for that. So every Mauser like to have the 196 grain bullets doesnt matter what kind, round nose or Spitzer.
I got 2 Mauser and my loading favorite is :
Rottweil R 904 = 55 grains
Norma Vulkan = 196 grains
Brass= PMC
Primer= Winchester LR
OAL= 75 mm
and of 100 Meter shoot a group in size of a thumpnail. If you need more reloading data go to the German website www.waffen-online.de and under the Thread reloading = Wiederladen and look for 8x57 IS

My 98K doesn't seem to like the Hornady 170's - YMMV. I've gotten near MOA from mine with the 195+ gr bullets.

For powders on the 170s, try ~ 51gr of 4064.

CanukMauser: Would be nice to hear some followup on your S&K mount if you could.

Andreas I need a password to get in.

I plan to buy the 196gr bullets eventully as there are so many recomendations but for now I have a boat laod of free stuff I'd like to do the best possible with

Bullet: Sierra Matchking 200 grs

Hirtenberger Ladung für 200grs Nosler Partition:
8x57IRS
43,0grs Bofors RP2

Primer/ ZH HP 1225

8 x 57 IRS mit 200 grs NOSLER PT SP
TLP 44,5 grs VV N140 ( Vithav)
Primer/ ZH WIN LR
OAL / L6 77.00 mm

26,5 grains N110 ( Vithavouri ) behind 150Grain Hornady-Teilmantel; Patr. Länge 75,5 mm ( OAL )

K98k ein RWS SG 187grs und 25grs N 110 ( Vithav) mit sehr guten Ergebnis.( very good results)
