I have pretty much sealed the deal for a older Husqvarna in 8mm Mauser. I know nothing of the round other that the basics of it's history. What are you guys using for powder and bullets the previous owner shot factory ammo and said it prefered the heavier stuff (190gr) What are my choices I see Norma offers a good bullet selection for 8mm but I have never worked with Norma bullets before. I am heading into the city this weekend and was going to pick up some components so I was just wondering what you guys are using so I have a baseline of what to look for. Thanks

Guess I should add I plan to hunt deer and moose with the rifle.

It is about the same as a 30-06 or 308Win in power. You can think in terms of similar bullet weights 150 to 200 gr.

All teh bullet makers have 8mm bullets. I assume yours is a 0,323" barrel (not the WW! 0.318").

I suggest the 200 gr end of the spectrum. I load the 196gr. Great for moose and not too explovive on deer.

For powder, use something between 4895 and 4350. I like 4350.

I don't have the rifle yet but am sure it's the .323 bore. I was thinking the 200gr speer hotcor to start but the 196gr norma vulcan seems interesting aswell the way they describe it. What 196gr bullet are you using? I have some 4350 on hand so I think I will start with that.

8mm mauser is a very good round for North American big game in my opinion. Lots of guys like the Hornady 195 SP's and they are a great blend of price/performance. You probably could not go wrong with TSX's or Accubond's, but they are much more pricey. Personally I shoot inexpensive Speer 170's and 220 gr Sierra Gamekings, kind of the high and low ends of the spectrums. If I was going for one bullet only, I'd go with the Hornady 195's.

alot of fan fare for the accubond in that thread linked above. Pardon my ignorance but can that bullet perform out of a low velocity round like the 8mm? A max shot for the conditions this gun would be used is 300 yards.

There are lots of .323" hunting bullets available. Hornay makes a 150 SP, a 170 RN and a 195 grain SP. Sierra makes a 150 and 175 grain SP and a 200 gr Matchking and a 220 SP BT. Speer makes 150's, 175's and 200's, all SP's.
Norma makes good stuff, but it's expensive.
"...am sure it's the .323 bore..." Highly likely. The Germans changed to the .323" in 1905. The rifle that old?

My comment about 0.318" was in case it was a commercial rifle. I suspect that most old mausers were changed over to the new barrel. I notice that even my '88 Commission rifles are 0.323".

But I have a German commercial sporter, made in the '20s, that is 0.318".

Ignore the bit about 0.318 bullets for your mag.

manufactures will make bullets intended for a hi power or low power loading. You don't want to shoot 30-30 bullets in a 300 MAg.

I don't have a 8 Rem mag. But I bet there are some bullets made for it with heavier jackets than the ones inteded for a 8x57.

8x57 bullets, down loaded a bit, would make great deer bullets. But a 8 Rem mag bullet in a 8x57 would not expand well.
