8mm Mauser

Yes it is a Styre Mannlicher in 8*57 that was given to me by my grandfather. He used it as his utility rifle since the end of WWII when he bought it of a friend who brough it back from Europe. He used it succsefully on deer, moose and mainly bear that threatened his cattle every spring. I don't know much about the rifles history befor this time as all the markings are in German. Thanks every one for the input on this caliber.

I think you are wasting your time with that caliber, totally useless.

Give me a call and I will be happy to buy it from you...only cause your a new CGN member and I like to help.

sorry but it won't be for sale untill I blow it up.

Ah, in that case let me recommend the following load: dredge the case through a nice chilled tumbler of Unique, tamp it down a few times, and seat a 300 grain wadcutter until you can juuuuust see the nose peeking above the top of the case. It may take some slight coaxing to fit it in.

:runaway:

I load two for the 8x57: a 170 grain interlock at 2625 (RL 15), and a 200 grain accubond at 2400 (IMR 4831). Trajectory is plenty flat, and recoil is comparable to a .308 with stiff loads. Didn't get a deer with it this year, but the failures were all about me failing to locating an animal the day I had 'er out, not with the cartridge

Ream it out to 8mm-06! it;ll still look the same on the outside but that cartridge will dump anything on this continent. Its called the poor man's magnum and a favourite of the late Ellwood Epps,

I wouldn't mess with it.
8mm is plenty for anything this side of the Rockies.

Nothing wrong with 8mm-06 but that would kill the value as a collector.
