Actually, Spitzer shaped cast bullets can shoot quite accurately ----IF YOU SLOW THEM DOWN. The round nosed cast bullets were mostly designed to be sort of a two diameter, bore riding bullet. The nose portion was the bore diameter, and the base was the groove diameter of the barrel.
A lot of people are in love with Velocity, and try to load the Spitzer type cast bullet to higher speeds. Unfortunately, these higher speeds tend to destabilize this type of bullet and results in larger groups. I have, over the past 60 years or so, shot a lot of lead downrange, both in practice and in competition, and have shot cast bullets out to as far as 600 yards on the target ranges with accuracy on a par with .303 Mark 7 Ball. While the Spitzer performs well at under 200 yards, the older Lyman 215 grain round nose will give target accuracy at the longer ranges. However, due to the slower speeds, you have to have a good adjustable rear sight, and keep records of the sight settings.
