I've had a beauty Remington Model 700 Classic in 8 MM Mag, tucked away for some time. I'm thinking about starting to load for it. Looking for some ideas. Also any opinions on the 8 Mag, etc? Thanks.
I owned one for a few years but rebarreled it to 338x8mmrem mag since at the time, the variety of 8mm bullets was very small. My own gun preferred imr 4831 and would drive a 200gr partition at 3050fps out of a 26" barrel.
Art, you really don't want to keep that obsolete old relic. I'll do you a favor and take it off your hands for you. Heck, I'll even toss in a couple bucks to cover shipping for a good measure   ...KF
if I was to load for one I'd be trying 200 gr. Nosler Partitions or Barnes XLC's over H4831, IMR 7828, or H1000. Cant imagine any north american big game that the 8mm loaded properly cant take
The 8 Rem Mag is a truely underappreciated caliber. I have one in a 700 with 26" barrel (not factory) and it routinely will give me 3100 fps with 220 gr Hornadys. I like it a lot. It groups a little better with the Sierras, but I think the Hornadys are a better bullet at this speed. Barnes makes some useful weights as well, and the 200 gr is ok in the Partition. I'll have to check my load books, but I think RL22 was my most useful powder in this combo. - dan
I owned two M700's in 8mm Mag and have made the longest shot to date with that caliber. I used a 220 Sierra SBT to take a moose at just over 400yds with one well placed shot, I never recovered the bullet since it was a pass through. Don't sell your gun! If you handload it is better off today than when I owned mine. The advent of the 325WSM will bring new bullets to the market which will increase it's appeal, my opinion. It is a great round and was ahead of it's time.
