I am looking for some bargain 8x42 mm Binoculars. I don't want to say Cheap, but I want a good set without breaking the bank. There must be all kinds out there that I have never heard about. What have you tried and liked and Hated ?

for $200+ you can buy a pair of William Optics (big company int he world of astronomy) and get their 8x42/44 (forget what size) from IslandEyepiece.com. Just tell Brian I sent you and he might even give you a deal on them. I recommend these bino's as they're a fully multi-coated apo triplet bino. not extremely high end, but about 95% the quality of the high end lenses. I plan on buying a pair for either my brother or dad in the next bit.

if you're not scared of importing from the US, take a look at GarrettOptical.com's triplet bino. same bino, different housing...about $175US before shipping (sent via USPS to avoid the courier charges). excellent company. bought a pair of 20x80's from Garrett and he's willing to answer any questions you've got. :D

Another safe bet is from the camera manufacturers. The Nikon Monarch ATB's are pretty good for a mid-level bino. The Pentax DCF-WP(an older discontinued, then recontinued model) are exceptional. You'd be better off spending a couple bills on a better used pair, than spending it on a new pair. IMHO

The current line of Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42's are discontinued, they are being re-released in a couple of months with new coatings. I know that Cabela's in Winnipeg should still have some stock of the older ones. $339.95
