8X57, Hornady 170gr SST and YOU!

On what type of game?

Used Hornady's SST in a 30TC in 165 grain, dropped a moose from 300 yards and it never got up from the first and only blow, if that's any consolation. Good penetration, expansion and went out the other side somewhere; upper shoulder/neck area.
 
at the speed you will be producing it will probably be an excelent game bullet. i use 195 hornady il and 200 partitions in my 8 mag and 325wsm i find the 195h to be a very accurate bullet in 8mm's.

You are presuming I have one to drop off. My EX's divorce lawyer...ah.well...you know...

The Hornady rn 170 shows 2850 velocity. Hope it's close with SST. Any idea if COL will be the same for both bullets? Can't find any data. RN shows 2.823 COL

I think..dunno....but I think your comparison is apples-oranges. The 8X57 has a lower velocity and a barrel twist that works best with long European style bullets. I am looking specifically for 8X57 experience. 8mm Rem Mag is way over my head.

I will mostly be hunting deer around Brooks in the river valley. I also have a draw for cow moose near Wainwright.
Did you load yr own? If so, was there a different COL between different types of bullets? I am trying determine if there is a different COL between Hornady 170gr RN and the 170gr SST.

The sst is a decent bullet for soft targets. Broadside shots sure. Close range with a lot of velocity they will break apart.

The listed velocity is 2830 for 170gr Hornady rn in 8X57. I suspect SST should be very close in velocity. Kind of surprising it's not as popular as it should be.
 
I used to use the hornady 170g round nose and imr 4064 at 2630 fps, and found it a great load for white tails. They were very accurate, but the best load for accuracy was using the hornady 195g bullet at about 2550 fps. It was a one hole load at 100 yards, but it beat the crap out of me from that old Turk.
