8x57 Superpreformance and Match by Hornady....pretty disappointing!.........Well I bought some hornady made ammo. One being 196gr Match listed at 2500 fps and the 180gr super performance GMX 180gr listed at 2700 fts. I decided to chronograph some rounds. The 180gr GMX averaged at 2500 fps, a full 200ft slower than listed velocity and the 196gr averaged 2300fts, yet another 200ft short of its listing. Used two rifles to determine actual speeds. I used a old 1944 german mauser and a newer zastava m70. I also chrongrahed some 196gr fmj from sellior and bellot which is listed at approx. 2568. Results from the FMJs were more pleasing at a average of 2500fps. The Superpreformance runs around 60$ a box, the Match ammo runds around 40$, and the Sellior and bellot around 28$.

Great value for sellior and bellot, as its also capable of shooting 1 inch.

I guess I will stick to reloading.....where I can get 180gr bullets at about 2750fts, and 195gr sp at 2550-2650 fts.

just letting folks know about this ammo, if you were wondering.

Most velocities printed on the sides of boxes require a pinch if fairy dust to actually achieve in your rifle.
That or an unrealistically long, super tight, match-grade barrel.

its just ball park figure. Conditions matter as well. Humidity, temperature and barrel length all will affect velocity of particular load.

Yup, and b.s. is sometimes just that.

Thanks for the info dgradinaru.

Need to fund up for a chrony to see what is happening with my pre-loads.

Well - I guess if a manufacturer warranted the performance of their ammo, and people actually challenged them on it, there might be some truth to their claims.

There probably is truth to it. In their test rifle on that particular day. Where they are. Change any of those variables and you won't see the same results.

I've seen other advertised speeds chronograph pretty close. 200 fps is clearly under loading.

I guess US ammo makers are still scared of idiots putting .323 sized bullets into .318 barrels...
