8x57

It works well, I've taken game from coyotes to elk with it. For the 21H I use a 200 gr NP at 2500fps, and Milsurps get a 200 grainer at 2300fps.

Lately I've been thinking of trying the 160gr TTSX.

I was looking at those myself . Be sure to post your results when you do . I've used Speer 200 gr bullets for more years than I can remember , they work really well on everything I've taken with them , Moose , White-Tails and a Porcupine that was chewing on my apple tree .

The 8x57 is also a super accurate round.

I'm unabashedly a fan of the 6.5x55,but the 8x57 shoots a heavier bullet, make it bit better for bear. These old chambering haven't lasted over 100 years for no reason

I got my 9.3x57 for 'thump' , big chunk of soft lead moving along at moderate speed hits like the hammer of Thor...think freight train

Anybody hunting with the 8x57 ? My main hunting rifle is a swede 6.5x55 and I have several 9.3x57 but never owned an 8x57 ( although I reform 8x57 brass to use in my 9.3 x57.The 8x57 seems like something in between, although I'm not sure what practical use it would be since I have the others or what advantage there would be .Tradeex has a good selection in both M96 and M98 at very reasonable prices ...and it looks to fit somewhere between a 303 and a 30 06 which should make it a good choice as a hunting rifle but I suspect the lack of popularity has more to do with being a European metric caliber rather than anything else.Pretty good value though...

I would suggest the M98 if you are going to jump in.
#### on opening would be a good reason.

Ooooooo I so was not considering my k98 a Bear gun... but a little S&B SPCE would probably make short work of anything.

Tradeex has a bunch of S&B SPCE 8x57JS
I ordered some replacement rounds the other day. The ones I received were in the new black box, rounds looks the same as green box and shot the same so I will go on a limb and say they are fair add-ons to your green box stuff. Very consistent and I would say hotter than PPU and Hornady and much hotter than Winchester super X. I experimented

3-9x40 Leopold scope zero to 100m with my Badace no drill mount on K98. Scope zero for S&B
S&B SPCE- 5 rounds in or on the boarder of a 1 inch square...
Hornady interlock Int/custom- same verticle plane 4 inches lower with similar grouping
PPU- rarely do I hit paper with 8mm PPU. There seems to be no logic in where those rounds go. Same issue 2 rifles.
Winchester Super x interlock - tight group inside the 1 inch box but lands a full 8 inches lower than S&B on the same target

I'm not a scientist but redneck logic told me S&B was the way to go as a good general round for my rifle. Winchester may be nice for closer distance on smaller game but at much more money per box Winchester does not make sense because it shoots so low with my other k98 as well with iron sights. 1/3 Up from 200 is approx zero to 100m with the Winchester and my k98 irons. Much easier to set 100m with S&B and hit bullseyes then 200 and shoot 200... I buy these rounds whenever I find them and I have spare change.

Nice comparison. I would be curious how the Canada Ammo surplus compares as many people find it hot.

Some velocities from my logbook:

Bell (IK Headstamp) 150gr - 2729fps
Bell (IK Headstamp) 180gr - 2480fps

Igman (Bow 2 dot headstamp) 170gr - 2590 fps
Igman (Same headstamp) 198 gr 2413 fps

Remington 170gr - 2190fps

The reason I'm looking at the 160 TTSX is my wife wants me to switch to lead free for hunting and also to flatten trajectory for coyote. I can't see how they will improve on the 200 NP for Big Game.

Bonus I just found a box of 180 BTs that I didn't know I had.

I hunt with a cleaned up by my from rough unmarked (fully peened) K98. It is accurate as the day is long once sighted for the particular round. I carry it for moose, would good for deer as well. Great general purpose cartridge.

My hunting mauser is my most accurate rifle by far. Best deal ever the rifle looked like it sat out in the desert for a few months when I got it, after some rehab its a real looker, mounted a no drill scope mount that holds like a champ and perfect last a lifetime hunting rifle.

You're probably right about the performance , I was looking at a flatter trajectory for farm country White Tails ........ and you gotta love finding bullets .

I wouldn't go much past deer with the SPCE. I recovered nothing but pieces in a bear from last spring. One in the shoulder and two in the bread basket. Didn't hold together well. I only use them on paper now.
