8x57

Not found at local Canuck Tire or Wal Mart, but should be no problem at sporting goods and gun stores.

Learn to reload for 8x57, commercial loads are very soft to be safe in older guns. Full house reloads are much more potent, not to mention cheaper.

I agree with the comment about handloads, but caution that hot loads should only be used in strong rifles such as the M98 Mauser.

The closest any affordable commercial round gets to the original German full power round is Sellior & Bellott's 196gr FMJ.

Thank you Czechoslovakia!!

MV around 2590fps with 196 gr bullet.
Winchester load is MV 2360fps with a 170gr bullet

Received last week from North Sylva Co along with my 5,000 case of SK .22lr

The 1904 loading for this round had a 154-grain flatbase bullet at 2881 ft/sec: actually HOTTER than a .30-'06!

It's a good cartridge for handloading, no secrets, no tricks. I still have the dies I bought in 1965, have NO idea how many rounds they have put together over the years.

It likes 4895 powder, also 4064, especially in the 98k, which has only a 23-inch tube. Slower powders in the old 29-inch barrels and you can really speed her up and still keep your pressures fairly low.

Good luck.

BTW, I made my first 300 brass out of '06..... REALLY rough on the hacksaw arm!

Are 7mm Mauser and 8mm Mauser the same calibers? I saw 7mm Mauser at the local gun store and was curious.

Agreed with what Stevo said. Though sometimes you will see 8mm Mauser labelled as 7.92mm x 57. The 8mm Mauser denotation seems to be a North American label while the 7.92x57 seems to be a European label for the same ammo.

7.92X57mm (military) is the same as 8X57JS (sporting).

However there is also the 7X57mauser cartridge which was designed in 1893 and is still a popular sporting round.
The 8mm and 7mm mauser are NOT the same.

If you were to put 7X57mauser into a 98k which takes 8X57JS(7.92X57mm)
YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A S**TTY DAY!!!
