How many gunnutz hunt with the 8x57 Mauser.

Just having my father's 1940's built mauser (he used it in the '60's) refurbished with a Timney trigger/safety and a new scope. I have not yet hunted though I hope to use it for the first time on deer next fall.

Do I need to start reloading to get decent hunting loads? I've only seen a couple of commercial loads in Ontario.

I got my 8x57 for moose hunting and have never gone, and likely will never. It has taken a few whitetails and slammed them hard. But I am going to do my hunting with muzzleloader and bow from now on, so will no longer be using it.

I shot my moose last fall with my M700 Classic chambered in 8x57. Quite an impressive performance, I might add. I was shooting the 200 Accubond, chased by 49 grains of Vihtavuori N-150 in a Winchester case lit by the WLR primer. Shot was just over 260 yards, and it was a bang-flop. Bullet also exited. I believe it performs much like the 30-06, but of course, makes a bit bigger entry hole!! Regards, Eagleye.

Not YET! :D ;)

My best friend used one for his first years of hunting. I haven't seen it for a long time but it was sporterized in Germany, complete with an old all steel 4x scope w/ German post reticle. Very high on the cool factor.

Noel and the 9.3x57

Noel, that caliber is an idea I been thinking about doing and possibly going with.358 bullets. I believe the 9.3 is .366 diameter , correct ? Anyways it's a cool caliber but the .358 stuff will be easier to get. :beerchug:
If you do get one post pics for sure and range results and better still , :ar15: game results.

The straight 9x57 would work for you John, and I know where one is but the barrel is shot out of it. I can get you in touch with another fellah if want. Send me a pm and I can give you his contact info.

8x57's great. It's the original 'all rounder,' (along with the 7x57), and if Germany had won the war, it'd probably be the standard hunting round today instead of the '06
