Hi everyone, picked up a drilling with the above caliber... anyone know where to get ammo? or reloading supplies for this cartridge?
Thanks - Isaac

I just googled "8X57 ammo canada" and found three businesses that have it in stock... did not look further. That Google thingy really works...

Thanks - looks like the reloading angle is how its gonna have to go... as soon as my team membership kicks in i'll get a picture up - its a bockdrilling - pretty rare and pretty cool!

Nope, none of the previous suggestions here are what the OP needs. The modern bore & bullet diameter, indicated by the "s" in the caliber designation means .323" bullet diameter. And the Rimmed cartridge is designated but the "R" . The OP needs the old .318" diameter bullet ammo. 8x57IR - and S&B, or RWS are the only two manufacturers that I know of that still make it. ( the I and the J are interchangeable in German script)
There are actually four different CIP spec cartridges, two with .323" diameter bullets, 8x57IS, 8x57IRS, and two with .318" diameter bullets - 8x57I, 8x57IR. And for USA manufacturers, SAAMI has the bastard 8x57 "Mauser" which is the rimless case loaded to low pressure with an in-between size bullet so it won't blow up 8x57I rifles when shot in an undersized bore.
When I had a drilling in 8x57IR, I got some RWS ammo off the shelf at Italian Sporting Goods in BC.

One more thought. My nice old Sauer drilling was actually fitted with a plunger extractor in addition to the normal extractor to engage the rimmed cartridge. I could shoot rimless cartridges and they would eject fine because of this feature. You may be OK shooting USA made SAAMI spec low pressure "8mm Mauser" 170 gr. RN ammo in your drilling. Not a satisfying solution and the ammo is not up to normal power or original specs, but it could get you shooting if your rifle has the optional extractor.

Finding loaded ammunition is going to be difficult, so it might be a handloading situation. You will need to find a source for .318" bullets, a source of rimmed brass (8x57IRS will work), and a set of dies. All can be had if you look around. Ch4d will make you 8x57IR dies but you might have to wait quite awhile for them. I had a similar problem with the rimless version 8x57I in a 98 Mauser but I eventually found all the components and dies. When you get your membership sorted out and accepted for the equipment exchange, go to the Reloading section and put in a WTB (want to buy) 8x57IR dies and loading components.

interesting to read about the optionnal extractor.

the I or J is interchangeable that is correct due to a mystake with the german language in writing when using the I looks like a J ... the s come for Spitzgeschoss that we can say as spitzer bullet. i do like the 8x57js and jrs but never own one despite shooting some in both caliber. i even shot a mauser 98 that was fitted to shoot only 8x57jrs ...

I did not know that might be possible, with proper extraction... certainly worth an attempt. Thanks for that.

Here is a picture - its in the mail...! Thanks for all the suggestions - definitely gave me something to go with!

I suggest you slug the bore to confirm the bore diamter; be it .318 or .323.
Hirsch (a site sponsor has 8x57R brass for sale ...Lapua I think.

I had some Hawk custom bonded bullets in .318" diameter, and recall that there is a Canadian dealer for those bullets. RCBS makes the 8x57IS dies, special order with the smaller neck expander. Shell holder is RCBS#26. You can use 8x57IRS brass after running it through the size die, with no issues other than the incorrect head stamp.

Finally came in! so far its awesome - onto getting the ammo dug up - definitely the .318 variety
