8X58R, smokeless, jacketed loads

I am going to take my 8x58R Danish rolling block hunting this year.

I am looking for a good smokeless powder and charge weight for a 150 grain jacketed soft point.

I have the bullets but haven't got a good 2200-2600 fps load. If I have to I am going to work from the 30-40 krag load data but would appreciate a load that someone has used safely in their RB.

Anybody care to share their load? You can pm if you want to keep it secret.
 
I've only shot black in mine so far so can't comment on a specifc load.

My thought though is have you found bullets the correct size? My rilfe mics to about .327 whereas most 8mm bullets are .323.
 
Thanks Andy. You have confirmed what I was deciding on this evening. I am going to make 5 each at 37 to 42 grains and stop when I get just below 2400 fps.

Where did you get your dies? I need a set. Not quite bad enough yet, to pay for a die reamer, but want some. I have a mold that I think may work for mine, and am willing to load black, to start.

And what are you doing for brass? Resizing 45-90?

You've seen the Dutchman's site? Pressure not to exceed 28Ksi IIRC.

Mystic Precision can supply the brass.

I use a set of lyman dies that I ordered from the US. I think buffalo arms.

The dutchman's site is a bible to me. He has done a lot of research on these guns and I respect his opinion. Helps that he is quick to answer emailed questions.
 
I Use 8X56R Hungarian brass (now difficult to find), but have also converted 45-90 (which is expensive). Tradex sells 8X58R brass.

For dies, I have RCBS dies. If you load any number of 8mm rounds, Lee 325 WSM F/L dies function quite nicely as a neck-sizer. After a few firings, you'll need to full or partially full-length size, and if you use 8X56R brass, Lee sells dies for that too.

As for loads, some exist such as on Dutchman's website (and links from it), but you have already noticed that you can use 30-40 Krag loads. The 30-40 is a smaller case and has a smaller bore, and when its loads are applied to the 8X58R, those differences lower pressure sigificantly. This is a common approach used for obsolete cartridges - find a cartridge with published pressure data with similar or smaller capacity and bore size and use that data. Some people will squeal that you can't do that, but when there is no data, you relay on extrapolation and estimation (such as I do with "quickload") and in fact have done for the 8X58R.

$55 for 20 rounds of Bertram brass at TradeEx. Kinda owie!

Has Bertram's brass quality picked up or are they still having the quality issues, with hard brass and cracking that they were having a few years back?

The RCBS dies? Those from the group buy/special run that was done a few years back, or are they stocked?

There's jacketed data on Reloader's Nest.
"...Kinda owie!..." $78.95 per 20 from Shooter's Choice. Not kept in stock either.

Pretty sure it was the Aussie brass that was getting the coverage on the ASSRA forum a while back.

CH4D lists them for $78.25USD. (They probably have dies for cartridges that haven't even been invented yet.) I think dies are still allowed to be shipped to Canada, unless the US Dept. of Paranoia has had another case of the s**ts.
