I was having a difficult time at work and needed something to take my mind off it so I decided to build a 8x64s. The hardest part was finding a gunsmith that would take me seriously. One guy even started laughing and asked me why would I want to do something like this. The rifle started off as a 30-06. I wanted the Howa action and this one came up so I jumped at it. Straight barrel swap for anyone as crazy as I am to want to do it. Went with a Walther barrel. Load data was difficult to come by. The data on the Nosler site for the 8mm-06 is mild to say the least. Max load for 200 gr bullet is 2628 fps. You can get that from a 8x57. Anyway, for those who want to give it a try RL17 is the way to go. I'm still working on the 200gr Accutip but 2800 to 2850 fps with this powder is where I am now at about 59k psi. I think you could get it to 2900 fps at 62k psi but I have not interest to do that. Thanks to all as I've read everything on here about the cartridge and had lots of help from the membership. One commented that I should of gone with the Mauser given the cartridge background and he had a point so my family bought that Mauser Sporter with the horn trigger guard I posted last week. So again thanks to all for the help with data etc.

Builds only have to make sense to the builder... at least until you attempt to sell it... that is when the funky stuff hits your pocketbook. Your rifle should be a terrific thumper... I am not a huge fan of the 8mm bore, but I do have two 7X64 rifles, a Ruger M77-RS Mark II and a CZ 550 Lux... if it were me, I would be rocking to 200 grain Partition in that rig.

Nice job, now just to pose with it over a dandy Buck or Boar.

For the win...Then we'll have to convince you to look into an 8x68S. LOL

I like my 8x57's, everything used in WW2 by the major players were pretty equal in every aspect and make great medium/large game cartridges, nothing wrong with the 8mm bore.
Almost jumped on a 325WSM as there are shops giving these away now, but came to my senses quickly lol.

Oh, I have had a whack of them, 8X57, 8X68, 8 Rem Mag... but from a practical stand point, I bailed on everything between .30 cal and .35 cal, cuz I have way too many of both of those...

As far as that goes, I have never met a cartridge that I didn't like... but you can't (or I can't) own and shoot them all... the 8mm and .338's did not survive my cuts.

I like it!

The 8x57 has been good to me, taken coyotes to elk.

Were they mine, I'd load your older small ring exclusively with the Nosler Ballistic Tip due to the blue tip, to keep hotter loads out of it.

Not planning to load for the small ring. I have a lot of factory ammo so I'll stick with that. Not sure about the small ring. Agree don't what to try the hotter loads. When I re-barreled a Rem. 700 to 8x57 the smith thought I was crazy also. Krico made a 8x68s that I don't need but it would be tempting if I ever came across one.

That's a interesting build. I'm also an 8mm bore fan. Preferably the 8x57. I also have a 325 WSM and am looking to add more 8mm's to the collection like 8x64 and 8x68s.

I've been an 8mm bore fan for quite a while. Built a custom 8 Rem Mag, and after reading Charles Askins writings a few others (8mm-338, 8mm-378, a plethora of others). I prefer the 8 RM over the 8x68, it's a little quicker, but there's not a whole lot of difference. - dan

easier to get case for the 8rem magn too ... the 8x64s can be done from 7x64. a lot of mauser were rechambered in 8x60s and 8x64s. i know or i knew a guy that used only a 8x64s for chamois but it was the exception most used 270 and of course the 7x64 a very good caliber like many available as of today or yesterday.

What I like about the 8x68s is there is no belt and the operating pressure is slightly less. Think I'm the only guy in North America with a BRNO 602 in 8x68s. Woodleigh also gives a bit better selection of bullets for the 8x68s. As Dan has pointed out they are almost identical in velocity.
Would like to have an 8x64s as well at some point.

I always thought the 8mm is possibly the perfect bore size for 200gr pills.

I think so also but want to try the 220gr for my next load. I'm thinking 2600 fps with RL17.

I know of three other Brno 602's in 8x68 in my area , one of which used to belong to me . They aren't common , but there are a few out there .

I have just purchased an 8x64 BRNO ZG47 from Intersurplus. I’ve ordered ammo in stock but am looking for a set of dies. I have searched the net extensively but no go. Anyone know of any at your local shops or in your reloading rooms I could purchase. Looking forward to getting the rifle home!

I have a number of pounds of R17 I’d like to try to make this old classic girl really shine!
