I did some shooting on the weekend with some factory S&B ammo. I averaged 2725 fps with a 61 cm barrel and that surprised me as the listed velocity is 810 m/s 2657 fps with a 65 cm barrel. So if I factor in the barrel length its about 100 fps faster than I would have thought. This weekend I'm going to try my handloads. It seems to me that the pressure is a little higher with this rifle and that I most likely won't get to a listed max load. Is this correct thinking? You can't get speed without pressure?

You cannot get speed without pressure. You can use your Chronograph as a pressure limit.

However, this assumes you are using an appropriate powder. You can get pressure without velocity if the powder is too fast.

The best powders are 4895 and Varget or RL15.

Lots of shooters in my family, so I buy /build rifles in 3s. They are made identically. Chambers/headspace is so close the brass is interchangeable.

Each has its own favorite load and velocity with the same ammo can be 150 fps different.

So fast (or slow) barels is common.

You can't get speed without pressure?

Yes you can sort of, sometimes. Because velocity is not just dependant on pressure but also the duration of the pressure cycle. That's why you can get more velocity from the same or lower pressure with a slower powder.
