9.3 Interlock on Moose?

Hey guys,

I've trying to get a load together for moose this fall and saw at my "local" gun store they have the 286 grain Hornady Interlock in 9.3. The bullet would be shot from a 9.3x57 and I'm thinking a M.V. of around 2250 would be possible. I sent an e-mail to Hornady, and they recommended a speed of 1800 FPS for "best expansion results", which would be about 250 yards out with a M.V. of 2250, about the limit of my shooting abilities anyways.

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a "bigger" Interlock on Moose?

Thanks guys and gals,

Cory

no experience with the 9.3 caliber ... yet ......... but hornady interlocks work really well in my 30-06 , i can't see bullet failure being a issue with the 9.3mm bullets moving at 9.3x57 velocity's .

moose are easily taken with the 6.5x55 , 140 grain bullet ....... and your throwing a reliable bullet twice as heavy at one ..... if it is a clean shot it should go something like this ... " BANG ...... FLOP "

if you had a muzzle velocity of lets say 3500 fps , you might have issues with bullet seperation .

I think they'd work just fine at those velocities Cory, 52.0 of varget with that very bullet gives me 2250 fps @ 15 feet in my 98 actioned 9.3x57. I wouldnt recommend it in a 94 action though

They didn't work fine on a cow I plugged at 180 yards with a 286gr Hornady from a 9.3x62 She was hit on the back edge of the shoulder blade and the bullet went to pieces leaving nothing but a large surface wound.Required several followup shots.Interlocks have been failing for me in several calibers as of late and I never had a problem with them in the past 30 years.I think they have changed their jacket contruction but they won't admit it publicly.I have a 180 gr driven at 3000fps out of a .308 NM that didn't even expand going through a mulie doe length ways frontal chest shot................Harold

I can second that statement, the Hornady's got softer....read lousyier. Before GMX and Interbond showed on the marked the IL were very good and dependable bullets, not so right now.... IMHO the corporate bean counters want more profits so we should buy the premium bullets and get dissapointed with the use of the "old" ones.

i'll add this , the hornady interlocks i have and use in my 30-06 are from around 1998ish ( i got a " lifetime " supply off of a guy on ebay ) .

a guy might have to get a stack of wet phone books and fire a few of the new interlocks off and see what happens

Interesting,
I have had good luck with the Privi's and have killed elk, deer and bear with them , all retaining better than 70% of their initial weight and the elk and bear were shoulder shots both breaking and found on the opposite side in tact against the skin. (9.3x57, 9.3x62) I drive them 2250 at the muzzle in the x57 and just over 2400 in the x62 , I know Ted has had good luck with the Speer 270 as well killing a beautiful Yukon bear with it and if I remember correctly the bullet looked like it performed flawlessly.

gonna go shoot some hornadys into a bucket of wet sand later this week and see how they fare now! especially since I just bought 250 of them.

Yep, no flies on the 270 Speer!

One shot, complete pass through both shoulders. Bullet not recovered.

Here's one we recovered, a one shot kill on a 60+ moose.

This was on the way in. Those ribs are close to two inches wide!

Bullet was recovered under the hide, after passing through off shoulder.

Hve not used the 286 Interlock on game.

The Hornady Interlock cores seem to be a bit hard for optimum performance on game. Check out the Woodleigh 9.3s on the Tradex site, the prices are competitive with other premium bullets. These have developed a reputation for accuracy and excellent performance on big game around the world.

The pointed Woodleigh's have been found to be to hard to expand at X57 velocitys, there is a good thread on it over at Nitro express forums. The round nose version do much better.

Hornadys 9.3 bullet is of a new style for them. It has a flat point with 6 very fine slits in the copper jacket to initiate expansion it still has the interlocking ring. I cut one apart but have not tested it. It is new and I don't know if I would trust Hornady has gotten this new style "perfect" yet. THe 375 interlock in 270g has been changed over to this new style as well. I have a box but have not tested them yet either.

Can't go wrong with the Speer 270 of the Privi 286g, good track record for both.

It's hard to believe that either the Horn. or the Speer would not perform well at the speeds used in the 9.3 you are using.

here's a link to a fellow who's done some bullet testing with some of the 9.3 bullets into his own wet newsprint mix over on accurate reloading. Not game but looks to be a really well thought out way to compare apples to apples. Its on accurate reloading

and one more with some testing in a 9.3x57 , if you can speak swede so much the better

Harold the first pic of the 9.3 bullet is pretty sobering , there isnt much of that bullet left.
I take it that this is the bullet that came apart on the shoulder blade of your moose ?
