What is a rifle of similar power on this side of the Atlantic?
My son wants a rifle for a little larger game but a step off of the norm. He asked me about these. I know an 8 X 57 mauser is remarkably close to a 30-06 ( Nowhere near that awesome, someone will retort as 'The Star Spangled Banner' plays in the background).
Therefore a 9.3 X 57 must be similar to a big bore 30-06 correct?
We reload and cast bullets so what is unworkable to some is the norm to us. 6.5 X 55 is an well used gun in our clan for example. There are 3-4 of them floating around.
9.3 X 57 should be a provider up to 300 yds I would guess. Any folks with a valid opinion out there?

The 9.3 x 57mm will give close to the same performance as a .358 Winchester. Just like the 9.3 x 62mm will be similar to a .35 Whelen. Just proves that there's very little that's new. Most of the stuff that the Yanks have "invented" in the last hundred years has already been made better in europe. I like my 9.3 x 64mm, and I'm tempted to buy a 57 just to give it a little brother.

between 358win and 35 whelan. although heavier bullets are more readily available than for the 35's.

We tend to compare a 7x57 to a 7-08 and 6.5x55 to a 260, so a 358 win woould probably be a valid comparison, although as stated, the 9.3 can use heavier bullets. Or lighter ones and get a bit more muzzle velocity, i suppose.

I shot that cartridge in someones sxs blaser s2 rifle....That sob kicked hard....I hunt with a 300 wby & 7mmstw so im use to heavy recoil.

Actually my mistake,I think I was shooting a 9.3 x 74R ...Doh!

EricT got it right. The 9.3x57 is close to a 358 Win. Since you hand load, it would be a fine caliber for any North American game, within it's range limitations.

I've been seriously thinking of getting one myself. TradeX has a bunch of them at pretty reasonable prices.

The only issue with 9.3x57 is that most of them are M96. I would add a few hundred bucks for a M98. After reading the advantage of M98 vs M96, I would not buy any M96 unless for collection.

Yep, Irish twin to the 358 Win and don't let anyone tell you it's not good to 300 mtrs. It most certainly is, with a 200 mtr sight in my boys 358 is about 8" low at 300 mtrs and positively wails the pigs off the rail with 200 gn round nose bullets. There is nothing wimpy about it at 300 mtrs. The 9.3 X 57 should be a hell of a cartridge with the 250 gn Accubond or the 270 gn Speer which I use in my 9.3 X 62.
