9.3x57 vs 9.3x62 vs 300WBYmag?

For moose in bushy territory, although the occasional long shot (up to 500yds).
My old man is currently shooting 300wby mag, he has big magnum fever... I see tradex has a TON of 9.3x57's for CHEAP, also theres a thread under here somewhere about one....

His friends want him to buy a .338 lapua, or .375 HH , or even ruger mag...of course, its always easier to spend someone else's money.

Just wondering if the 9.3x57 (which i read is easily converted to 9.3x62) would suit the purpose of a moose gun in close brush and the occasional (what i consider to be long) long shot.

FYI, i personally believe that the 300wby mag is more than adequate for moose, as my dad has proven several times, but im sure he's itching to buy another firearm.

so.....what say you?
 
No question 375 (Pick one).

The 9.3's are great but the 375's offer offer more readily available components and resale factor.

If money is an issue just use the 300.
No problems there.
 
I guess I shouldve been clearer.....
The tradex guns are dirt cheap, 250 or so.... I realize 375 is a nice cal, but how much is a rifle in that cal?...

Restating the q: will one of the 9.3mm calibers perform as well as, or better than 300wby mag?

Dan is right.

If you weren't including 500 yard shots, I'd say the 9.3's are perfectly up to the job, and much nicer to shoot. As much as I love the 9.3x57 and 9.3x62 however, they honestly are not 500 yard guns. The .375 H&H reccomended to your father tends to drop about 60" at 500 yards with 300 grain bullets, so it's no flat shooter at all either.

If your dad is wanting a great moose rifle that can handle all sorts of shots at all sorts of ranges, he bought the correct rifle in the first place.

If he wants to go bigger, and still be a serious long range rifle, he'd have to jump up to something like a 338 Lapua or a .375 RUM, both of which are way overpowered for moose, and hit the shoulder pretty hard.

Personally, I'd suggest he get a 9.3x62, which will really be fine out to 400 yards with handloads, and maybe bring two rifles on his hunts (the 9.3 and the 300), if he insists on shooting moose past 400. Or just get that little bit closer and stick with the 9.3, period.
 
Very cool, ill show him this. I looked up the ballistics and saw a big difference in muzzle and 200yd energies between the 9.3 and 300.... The wby had higher, even with the lighter bullet.

Simko, I bought a Husky M96 9.3x62, from Tradex. Great cartridge, decent rifle. If I were doin' it again, I'd look for a M98 though... M96 is #### on closing, which I find a bit odd. But I didn't know that goin' in.
