9.3x62 280 grain cast boolit and Unique

I recently got a mold for my 9.3x62, with the bullets weighing in around 280 grains. I want to try some Unique (love the stuff!) and just wondering if anyone else has tried this?? I'm thinking around 14 grains.....what do you think??:confused:
 
Why do people making and loading cast bullets misspell them - "boolits"? Just because there is a USA website that spells it wrong? Makes shooters appear stupid and uneducated IMHO. If there is some reasonable explanation I'd like to learn what it is...
To address your question: Unique is one of the best powders ever made for cast bullets if you are satisfied with moderate to low velocity. if so, you have chosen well.
The Lee manual has some insights about powder burning speed, pressure and bullet alloy hardness. It is possible to drive cast bullets much faster than Unique can, by choosing a somewhat slower burning powder that is easy to ignite but still generates appropriate pressure for the alloy being used.
 
I call them "boolits" out of habit....nothing more, nothing less. Just looking for loads using Unique powder and that's all. I have slower powders, but not looking for top end loads.
 
To the lay person, a bullet is the entire cartridge but we know the bullet is just the projectile. There are two types of projectiles, factory manufactured (bullet) and home cast (boolit). Slang for sure but it is a word of the trade.

I think you have the right idea. With Unique, you'll get nowhere the highest MV's, but you know that. I have a 35 Whelen, and I've shot a 286gr cast bullet from it with Unique. I use Unique in the 10.0-15.0 gr range, and my MV's are from about 1000-1300 fps - I recommend the same loads for you. The 9.3X62 is a slightly larger case, and has a slightly larger bore, so your pressures and MV's will be lower.
 
I went ahead and tried the 14 grains of Unique behind the 280 grain yesterday afternoon. God hates a coward, right??:p I did some extrapolation from other cartridges using the Lymann Cast Bullet Handbook. Was very mild, but still chuckin' a big hunk of lead off into yonder was fun. They drop like a rock though.:D

Learning time! :D

"Bullets" are either things people load into Hollywood guns and pretend to shoot each other with, or they're the business portion of a cartridge that comes either in factory rounds or is bought for reloading purposes.

A "boolit" on the other hand is a very special thing, because it's made from recycled garbage (wheel weights for example) and casted by the industrious into something beautiful, useful, and fun.

"Boolit" - yea, in the vernacular of bullet casting, it distinguishes cast from jacketed. Another word that infuriates the tweed jacket and meerschaum pipe crowd is "smelting". In the boolit casting vernacular it means "melting down scrap and removing impurities".


On a regular basis, someone starts a rant (on castboolits of all places), gets shouted down, and slinks off to his smoking room to ponder matters of the empire and its decline. Language evolves, and it's a real word, like it or not.

Can someone here tell me where to get a 9.3mm mold in Canada?

If 1900fps is easily achievable with this calibre bullet, that's so close to the jacketed velocities that I'd really want to give this a try.

I agree, a bullet is a ho-hum j-word bullet, whereas a BOOLIT is something you've made yourself and you can be proud of how it shoots and any game you take with it!
 
Further to my last post,folks looking for molds for the 9.3 should look at Accurate Molds, a U.S. outfit that make beautiful molds in brass and aluminum, and it looks like they make for the 9.3 but you would have to contact them for exact sizes. There is also an Aussie outfit that makes nice molds and prolly in 9.3 but their name escapes me now, something like CPE or some such...IMHO

I think it is for the same reason some choose to use silly nicknames or "Handles".... colloquialisms...
