I want a 9.3x62 (unless someone can REALLY push 338-06 or .35 whelen over it, shooting within 500 yds).

My question is, whats the better gun? a commercial m98? or an m96? i know the 98 has another lug, is one action safer than the other? can one handle hotter loads?

98 action is stronger and has better gas handling features.
The best are the actions with "C-ring" (C-type broach cut) internal collar.
The 96 designs lack the interal collar of the 98.
Desirable actions include:

--Oberndorf military and commercial
--DWM military
--FN military and pre-WWII commercial
--Czech VZ-24
--Argentine 1909
--Czech VZ-33 and 33/40 small ring
--Early post war FN commercial (pre-1949)
--The notoriously rare early post war FN small ring made for some police, military, and other state agencies (similar to FN commercial LR actions)
--Brno 21/22 small ring and large ring
--Brno ZG-47
--Mexican 1910 and 1935 small ring (for intermediate cartridges like 7x57)

The cost and effort to convert military actions to a sporter config might be prohibitive to some, so finding a good commercial action is the best bet.

I'm not looking at a conversion, but just buying a commercial mauser. Probably a husqvarna or fn from tradex. Is there great difference between husqvarna and fn?

Some early Husqvarnas used FN98 actions. If you are looking for a rifle that can safely handle intermediate cartridges, then you can't go wrong with either a 96 or 98 action, meaning all Husqvarnas would be fine -- they're also among the most accurate Mausers in the world.

I'm looking at a couple different tradex mausers, just want to know if the m98 is better than m96 in same caliber. The price difference is significant. If the 98 is better at handling the load and venting gas ill probably sopend the extra coin. My face is worth it

You can also look for a 1640 model in 9.3X62, as safe as a Brno 21/22 or even ZG47.
If you absolutely want a model 649, wich was both made with a M/38 (or what people call a M/96) and FN M/98 action. The 640 made on the FN action ('46 to '53) are the best whitness to learn each phase of the alterations conducting to the Supreme action.
To complicate all, HVA sold both the M/98 and the M/38 made variants at the same time...
As others metioned, as long as you don't want to make a 9.3X62 Magnum with it, there is no problem using the "96" variant, I use one myself.
But, yes, the M/98 is constructed stronger and as better gas handling than the M/94 variants, it's a ####-on-open but is a tad heavier.

then, either model, was it a M/94/96/38 variant, a M/98 or a 1640 will do the job just the same. My own heart goes to the 1640, though.
