I'm really new to reloading. I've been buying all the equipment and I want to get started. I got a deal on some Hodgsons Universal Clays and need a load for it. I have some 9mm, 124 grain, lead, round nose bullits and some winchester primers also some mixed brass. I need to know the minimum/maximum load and the length. The closest I can see on the Hodgson site is...125 GR. LCN Hodgdon Clays .356" 1.125" 2.9 899 22,700 CUP 3.3 993 30,900 CUP ...does this sound like a good starting load? I do have the ABC's of reloading by the way and I've read. But is this as complicated as it some people make it seem or are they just trying to develop more accurate loads? I just want a plinking load..I've done a lot of searching but can't find exactly what I want...even a link to a good load would be great. Also I do realize that the Lyman 49th edition would be a valuable tool...it's on the way....Thanks...Bill
 
Yes all the info you need is right there. Load some up and get out and see if your gun likes them. the fun of reloading is to tailor the load to your gun so start at the minimum load, and load 5 or 10 shells then add a .1 grain load 5 or 10 more and so on till you reach max. You may also want to try different bullet weights and powders. It's really lots of fun and interesting once you get going on it.
 
try to stick with the same brass, as far as the loading i started 4.2 all the way to 4.6gr

The closest I can find on the Hodgson site for Universal Clays, which is what I got, is for 125 gr. LCN. For the 124gr. LRN, which is what I need, it gives the data for Winchester WSF. Would it be alright to use the load data for the 125 gr. LCN or is the Winchester WSF the same powder as the Universal Clays?
 
you're NOT telling us what gun it's for- those loads of DRSLAV are going to cause NOTHING BUT HEADACHES in a beretta- in spite of what the book says , the spectrum of 9mm /231 in 124 grain is 4.6 to almost 5- i use 4.9-5 full grains in my beretta and uzi to be sure the SLIDE/bolt GETS PUSHED BACK ALL THE WAY to ENGAGE THE SEAR- to do otherwise results in a rather nasty sequence of stovepipes, misfires, and fte/ftfs
 
Universal Clays, Clays and WSF are all DIFFERENT powders, charge weights will be different.

Make a dummy round - no primer, no powder, with recommended OAL, check if round drops into chamber without getting stuck on way in and out.

Since you are to use Universal Clays and OAL 1.12" with lead bullets - you are looking at 3.8-4.0gr powder charge.
 
Sorry about that...the pistol is a Norinco 213. My first box of factory ammo was American Eagle, 147 gr. FMJ flat point. That was a disaster, failing to load about 5 out of 8 rounds of each magazine...Chalked that up to experience. Second box was American Eagle, 115 gr. FMJ, round nose...a world of difference..lots of fun after that learning curve..
 
Well, I fired off an email to Hodgson a few days ago and they got back to me yesterday. They said I can safely use the LCN data. The reply was from
