Hello Everyone,

Looking for information from people that are using 9MM Major for IPSC.

Comment/concerns/suggestions about using this caliber.

Any load data that can be provided would be appreciated.

Thank you

Powder selction will be limited and ammo can be a bit finicky...but once you get it all worked out...no problems at all.

I'm using 8.9 gr 3N37
Winchester Small Pistol Primers
124 gr MG JHP
OAL approx 1.190

No signs of excessive pressure...but as always, start lower and work your way up.

Reloadiong tip

Make sure you get sufficient bell in the case mouth. If you don't have enough...the case can shave off a bit of the jacket and leave little "souviners" in the chamber. Once you get a couple in there the pistol won't go into battery

Good luck

It would help if you can give more detail about the gun you intend to use the 9 major ie. bbl length, number of comp ports, are you using a hybrid bbl....

One excellent source of information is http://www.brianenos dot com

I am considering buying a STI trubor in 9MM major and I am investigating the options for calibers and modification that I can do to it.

In researching this topic I am finding that more and more competitors are trying this caliber. To be successful you need a gunsmith who knows how to setup up major 9 open gun properly. Beside, if it does not work it is straight forward to rechamber the gun to super.

Uh WRONG!!!!! Only if you want a really sloppy chamber, call me and i will tell you why. Suddenly having flashback to 1993:jerkit: We have just got a stinger in major using loads done with longshot(SWEET). nuff said:evil:

buy yourself a super and save yourself the headache!

Sorry to disagree with you Walter , but there are no headaches if the gun is set up properly. I have been running a 9mm major for a couple of years. I did have both of my open guns re barreled to 38 super but after six months went right back to 9mm.

Dan Bedell built my main gun and a Friend and myself built my back up gun with Madness doing all the cosmetic.

The set up I found to work the best is a 9lbs recoil spring , a 17 lbs main spring , A properly tuned Aftec . I found that there was no need for barrel ports in ether of my open guns ( I put barrel ports in my back up gun and did not find any difference. ) If you do decide to put barrel ports in a 9mm gun you will have to pack more powder in to the case , which will decrease the number of powders you can use. As for mounts I played with different mounts. The side wases mount , the STI mount and the Dawson mount. I started with the Dawson and ended with the Dawson.

The best powders I found were :
VV 3N37
VV 3N38
VV N350
HS-6
SILHOUETTE
TRUE BLUE

I would stick to VV 3N37 and the VV N350 they are the 2 best powder I found in 9mm and they are abundant.

The load length is the biggest killer on the this round. 9mm was never ment to be loaded long . I have tryed ever length from 1.130" all the way up to 2.00". I found that 1.150" is the best length to load 9mm major to. No bullet tipping problems no chambering problems

Just my 2 cents.

+ 1 on Bedell...he even sent me the specs on the test load he used (and recommended I use)

The only proven issue that is specific to 9 major seems to be how fast the round ejects. Some people were having issue with the round hitting the scope mount popping back into the ejction port and jamming up the gun.

Most people managed to resolve it by experimenting with extrators and spring weights...and some used specially designed scope mounts that offset the scope or tilted it (Mobile has one)

The ammo in a Major 9 can be a bit more frustrating to setup...but once it runs...it runs flawlessy

...and you have more money left over to buy the 38 SC guys beer (they spend it all on brass)

Hey I run a Stinger in 9mm major.....one slide (crack smoking gun replaced it under warranty) 2 mounts (STI Crack) 1 OKO Red dot.....and lots of Gunsmithing (not me) I give up on the little thing for 9 Major...but I have to say it's sweet in 9mm minor steel load type.....the 3n37 and HS-6 is what I used the most.

I know/seen a few trubor in 9mm Major (never see them chrono so??) and they work fine these were factory, and still had the odd jams

I run 38sc and got zero problems. Bedell and Dawson gun's

Think again....not Ban at all actually it's on the rise...

Min in Canada 112 gr(Exception letter)
Jacket is what I use MG
What ever it take to make 160 PF (I loaded for about 170PF)
Don't know..... but the primer were looking good :)
Yes the are compensate gun ie OPEN Division....

Hope it help.

9 mm major has never been banned by IPSC. for years it was banned by USPSA because they were worried about the liability of someone picking a major round up and running it through a stock gun.

Maybe, perhaps, and ....

Okay. There are always some shooters on the edge. Innovation comes from discovery and adapability. 9mm major fits that.
What about the pressure?
As you know, 9mm has a maximum pressure rating at 33-35 thousand pounds per square inch. Thats a given right?
In order to make 9mm major, you need a very light bullet and tons of powder. What is the pressure rating and the velocity?

As for pressure I have no way to measure the pressure , but I know that are well over factory . As for velocity. I shoot a M/G 124 JHP @ 1370fps out of a 5.5" compedbarrel.

I thought IPSC banned 9mm major due to the safety concerns.
For those who do:
what is the bullet weight?
what is the bullet made of?
what is the velocity? and
what is the pressure?
A 9 pound recoil spring would probably need a compensator right?:50cal:
Most already answered, I'll help finish...

9lb is due to the Comp. With a compensator, you have to download the spring or the slide won't cycle. (and / or cut meat off the slide to lighten it)

Pressure in 9mm major is far above SAMMI spec. It should only be done in quality, fully supported barrels. For example, the STI 2011 barrel dimensions are for a 45 ACP, so when it's chamber is only cut for a 9mm piece of brass, it's got an awful lot of meat around it to contain pressure.
