Two questions as finding info on these is impossible and contradicting, so I hope someone knows something about these rifles.

1. I picked up a PE/PEM scope/upper mount (hex). This scope has the focus adjustment. Mount is marked '431', scope is marked 'Ay 1931c' over '1936r' with 'NB 1141'. I am looking to mount it to make a sniper clone. Obviously I need a hex receiver, but which year is correct? 1931 or 1936?
Secondly what is the proper term for a scope with focus adjustment? PE or PEM? Sites swap back and forth?

2. While looking over my rifles I have a 1942 izzy which I always assumed was an ex-PU sniper, but upon more research I discovered that it was actually one of the stop gap snipers with the non-focus PE/PEM side rail mounts. I'll post some pics later. Is it worth restoring? Or keeping as is?

Thank you

Wow congrats on the purchase.
I wanted a PE/PEM mosin since I got my first PU. I have yet to see any for sale on the EE - and for a short while you could obtain the mount - but the cost was really close to a whole PU clone so I never got around to it.

Where did you find the scope? I'm going to tag along the thread for the results.

Maybe Artyman can chime in? He's got a lot of mosin knowledge.
I have a book on mosins I can check out when I get home.

I got the scope/upper mount on Ebay from a seller that sells WWII and post war scopes and has been doing so for years. He had a non-focussing scope as well, but it didn't have the mount so I passed.

The stop gap rifle I stumbled into. I actually picked it up because it was a dark lami (1 our of a crate of 20 that had a lami stock), it was only when I got home that I noticed it was an ex-sniper. I won't f' with this one.

I'd leave her as is....sounds like your scope was made in '31;. and moved to another rifle in '36...pics of the markings would help....could have been refurbed and reissued too,.. with the non orginal mount..

1. You have so called PE scope. Actually, there was no PEM and PEM scopes in russian terminology. Both were PE scopes, with focus ajustment and without. Original mount base is almost impossible to find. Your scope was produced in 1936
PE snipers with top (Smirnskiy is correct name) mount were produced in 1932-1937. Single examples are known from 1938.
2. Definitely keep 1942 Izhevsk PE ex-sniper. They were produced only 1 year. But original Izhevsk side mount is very hard to find
Here is mine restored 1942 Izhevsk PE sniper

PE Scope Pics - Thank you again Ratnik
As an interesting side note, the picture looking through the optic is looking at the Herkules monument in Kassel Germany. I was an exchange student there in High School and 15+ years later I am still good friends with my exchange family. The city has the largest hill park in central Europe and numerous monument, etc. were built using profits from leasing Hessian Troops to the British during the American Civil War. Kassel was also one of the most historical cities prior to WWII and home of the Brothers Grimm. During WWII 90%+ of the city was bombed as it was a center for optics and tank components and the Berger Meister refused to surrender the city. Currently Leopard II turret parts are still made in the city and some Tankers in the Canadian Forces that I know have visited the plant. I recently acquired an original ZF-41 sniper scope produced in Kassel (clb).

They were produced in February-October. Last were produced after begunning of PU production. Source - factory reports. Anyway, very rare rifle, much more rare then Izhevsk 1942 PEM rifles

I know this an old thread but, would it be foolish to try and have it restored with correct side mount and bolt pattern or would I be destroying it.It has been refurbed already...the Accumount Chinese mounts have very soft screws and lousy scopes from what I've read.....Thanx Harold
