My Winchester 94 I inherited from my father in law has some odd things about it, and I'd like to pick your collective smith brains over this.

First off according to a few sources, on and off line the serial numbers on the receiver tell me that it is a pre 64. Yet it doesn't have the pre 64 loading ramp..it has the cheaper thin one.

Also the barrel bluing is almost new and doesn't match the receiver.

Is it possible that this rifle was a parts put together?

Are the parts for a pre 64, and post 64 that interchangeable?
If so could I replace the loading ramp with an older more solid one?

As this one is starting to give me grief.

Any thoughts?

Should be all the same parts, as for the barrel, may have a new one on there, or re blued. I would order a part from that warehouse in Alberta, not sure what its called. Thanks Dave, the place is Western Gun Parts, Edmonton , got a couple extractors from them when I was loading for a .307 in 94 win, got a little hot, and pealed a few of the long ones back,LOL.

Western Gun parts is the place.
The Cartridge lifter (terminology correction) is interchangeable as I understand it.
Sounds like a gun put together from parts. Kills collectablilty, but may be just fine as a shooter.

the cartridge carrier may not be interchangable, I had clearance problems with the loading gate. you did'nt say what problems you were having exactly, I found that mine was bent ,took it out straightened with pliers and was good to go,if you have the stamped one. they are too soft to be reliable. good luck :)

Sounds like you have a pre-64, if it is under serial #2,700,00. The machined lifters broke occasionally, and may have been replaced with whatever the local smith had on the shelf. The parts can be changed. I would give Irv a call at Western Gun Parts and he will tell you more about the rifle over the phone than you will ever need to know.

about the bluing, may vary gun to gun, part to gun part to part unless it was a custom matched. Things vary according to steel , concentration of salts, heat, time parts of an individual guns are often blued months a part. Only custom or high end specials are unit blued, this is true in production guns it is why you some time find mismatched serial #s in new guns arth

Pre 64 had machined lifters. 64 and shortly after had stamped lifters which I understand were routinely replaced with machined lifters whenever factory repairs or factory authorized repairs were made. I believe that all top eject lifters post 64 were interchangeable.

To Add to what I posted before. It was not uncommon for the blue on receiver and barrel not to match. For awhile, Post 64 receivers were cast and iron plated then blued. Needless to say, the blue on the receiver was not as durable and often wore off to where the receiver was grey and the barrel blue. Some receivers were also Black Chrome(?) plated resulting in a very shiny black surface.
