95% set on buying an SL8-4 - any last minute suggestions instead?

Hey folks,

As stated, I'm about to pull the trigger on the SL8-4 and would just like to put the final feelers out there.

I'm definitely want .223
Looks are important.
Non-restricted is a huge bonus, but not an absolute.
This will be a target rifle, not a hunting rifle.
I will be doing the mag well conversion to allow AR mags, specifically the 10 rounders.

The SL8 has looks and also has the potential for massive upgrades in that department. I'm still a function over form kind of guy though and am open to suggestions.

Comments, thoughts, suggestions? Anyone in S.W. Ontario actually own an SL8 right now?
 
The Tavor is another interesting rifle with similar characteristics.

+ .223
+ Non-restricted
+ Modern Looks
+ 10 round AR mags

The travor is a good option, it's a lot shorter and I think it's lighter as well.

But I would go for the SL8 as I had one before and I loved it.

The immediate availability of the SL8 is another thing you might want to think about as well.

so far I like mine. It's a bit heavy. main idea for me was non-restricted 223.
not as many cool upgrades as an ar-15, but has potential. Got mine from wolverine supplies. I live near T.O., but shoot it at the Peterborough range when I visit friends there. I'm waiting for a few accesories to arrive.

Why not a real AR? Granted it's restricted due to our dumbass laws here, but the aftermarket for it is HUGE, and it's probably the most accurate in terms of action design.
 
+1 for the AR... sure it's restricted, but it's the king.

Get an LMT or a Stag and spend the rest of the money on a rail and optic.. or any other of the endless upgrades!!
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys. The Tavor looks like a really neat rifle but the looks just don't do it for me like the AR or the SL8. The price is also a little much.

The AR just looks badass and I would be extremely happy with one. Accurate, upgradeable, accessories and options up the wazoo... but something is just drawing me to the SL8. Over half of my collection is German and damn, they know how to make a gun.

Why the SL8-5 instead of the SL8-4?

As far as I'm aware, the 5 variant has taller and longer rails than the 4 and also has iron sights. I can see the benefit of the iron sights but have been informed that they can get in the way when using a scope. That and the taller rail making the scope more elevated and the possible requirement for cheek spacers pushed me toward the 4 variant. Any further thoughts on that? I'm really interested in your reasoning.
 
yeah the Germans know how to make guns, the MP5 being one of the few they got right. do a search on the SL8's and learn from that. I'd never buy one. but then again I wouldn't take a G36 either, unless you paid me to.
 
If the Tavor is out of range for you, I'd also suggest an AR15 ... lots of good deals available in the EE right now, and as someone else pointed out, lots of aftermarket and choice of configurations. The big drawback will be its restricted status, of course ...

The SL8 is very accurate, but from what I recall, it's awkward and somewhat front heavy. I'd think it fine for shooting from a bench, but action shooting with it would be less than ideal.
 
Ignore slavex here. I own an SL8 thanks to uncle walther. It will NEVER be on the exchange here again! Sweet rifles, thought I am not a huge fan of the thmbhole. That could be better, made more comfortable. Otherwise, top notch! This thing will shoot alongside my remmy 700 Varmint all day long...I just hate chasing brass!
 
I really like my SL8-4 and bought it for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. I chose the short rail version as I had no intension of using it without a scope, although I would eventually like to find one of the aluminum upper rails that is shown on Wolverine's website. My thought right now is to replace the 10x Bushnell on it with one of those scope/laser range-finder units out there, either the Bushnell or the Nikon as I think it will fit with the overall look of the rifle and be the perfect varmint setup - that is if you're not walking around too much! Its more accurate than I can shoot (well, mostly everything is) but I wish the trigger pull was lighter. I'm told its a "match" trigger by the HK enthusiasts but I guess its all what you are comparing it to. I must admit though, when going to the range I usually bring something restricted instead. Oh yeah, maybe don't bother with the factory bipod - usually quite hard to find and a Harris is a lot more functional.
 
I just bought an SL-8. It is cool, but the stock is not all that comfortable and accessories are limited and expensive. I would go for an AR. You can use the same lower to mount a 20" heavy barrel target upper with a good scope or in a few seconds swap over to a shorty with a red dot.

The AR is cheaper and has far more bits and pieces readily available.

There are a lot of better options out there than the HK. If you want non-restricted, go pick up a PE-90, you won't regret it and they hold their value amazingly well, the HK won't. They're non-restricted, are quite accurate and very robust, whereas the HK can break if you look at it too hard, plus you don't have to deal with the horrible ergonomics of the HK thumbhole stock.

If you don't mind restricted, go buy or build yourself a bull barrel AR-15. You retain the ability to use 10 round magazines, have access to literally thousands of after-market accessories, there are great triggers available for the AR if you want to build a target rifle and they plain look a lot better than the HK.

Of course, the only person you have to please is yourself, so buy the rifle that best fits you and most importantly you like!

I've got the SL8-5. I chose the iron sights so I could still shoot it while I saved up for a scope. The front sight is too thick, it covers too much of the target at 100 yards. Something like 4 inches @ 100 yards. Go for the SL8-4.
