99 Savage Lever Boss Codes

I took out my old 99F for the first time in years, and thought I'd try to date it. The s.n. is 957,0xx but the code on the lever boss has me puzzled. It looks like a "g", but did they use lower case letters?

I would have expected a nice bold upper case "G" (which would be 1955 I believe). I can't decide if it's "g" or "6" or "9", and only half the 'oval' is there to begin with.

Very funny! The 99F wasn't available in 1951 and the serial number range is not even close for that WAG.

The lever boss codes were also stamped on the sides of the frames under the stock. Quite a few on the lever boss are poorly struck. It will be an upper case letter and it will be number followed by letter (inspectors number). For your serial number I would expect it to be 1958 and have a number followed by the letter J. Personally if you don't have to remove the butt stock I wouldn't just to see the code. I have heard of more than one savage stock being crack by someone trying to remove it.
