I've got a problem with my second hand Colt Series 80 1911 in 9mm. It will not extract commercial ammo. I've shot surplus ammo and hand loads a friend gave me to try with no problems whatsoever. I've tried a new extractor claw from Brownell's and it seems no different than the one it came with. I've tried that test for extractor tension whereby you place a round under the claw and see if it stays (it doesn't). It's almost like the claw is .020" too long. I've tried a lighter recoil spring and had some success but I still get about 20% FTF per mag. Anyone have any thoughts?

I don't mean to sound like a smart a** but you're sure it's got the right slide? Of course it should be marked. The breech face hasn't been messed with has it? Opened up for .45? Otherwise I would have thought the extractor was at fault like you did...

Compare your new extractor to the old one (first) to make sure they are the same

do both extractors fail the same amount?

HAVE YOU CLEANED THE EXTRACTOR CHANNEL ?????????????

Sorry for shouting but i wanted to make a point, dirt build up is a problem in this area

I hadn't thought about the slide. I do know this gun was blown up about 20 yrs ago and repaired. It had worked properly, but I guess maybe it was because the previous owner was running hot handloads. I'll try a .45 round under the claw and see if it stays. More homework ahead checking and researching dimensions. Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah she's clean. Many clp'ed qtips will attest to that. And I checked the two claws with calipers to make sure they were the same. The only thing that made a difference in the failure rate was the 13# recoil spring.
