I am thinking that my next pistol will be a 1911 - likely in 9mm because I have to feed the bloody thing. I have kind of narrowed it down to STI guns, and I am looking at the Trojan and the Sentry. Looking for some input. Thanks in advance!

no experience personally with the sentry but many IPSC guys like it out of the box for classic div. Have shot a trojan and would have bought one if I didnt come across a sweet deal on a spartan. Cant go wrong as its all STI and freedom ventures is a great distributor.

sentry does have a forged frame instead of a cast frame if that matters to you

If you're not totally focused on the standard combat length gun then also look at the Ranger II. I've shot both standard and officer's length guns in 9mm and there's something about the officer's length and 9mm that goes together VERY nicely for me.

I am partial to STI stuff since I own the best value target 9mm gun anywhere, the TargetMaster. The Trojan is nice, and made by STI, the Spartan is made for STI in the Phillipines. If you are trying to keep a lid on cost, take a look at the Ruger SR1911, the Remington 1911, or the always nice S.A.M. 1911's…

I second the STI Targetmaster. Mine in 9mm is a laser. Had my gunsmith go thru it and polish everything and drop the trigger pull to 2 lbs and it is amazing. Great quality, great fit and finish, and a gun to own for a life time. Everybody who shoots it loves it. Plus the aristrocrat sights on it are fantastic and very adjustable for all kinds of shooting, as opposed to the lower STI gun sights, which are also good though. For a few extra bucks, it is an easy choice. I'd recommend waiting a bit longer and spending a bit more and getting the best gun available. IMO.

The Sentry is a superior gun compared to the Trojan because of:
1) forged frame (vs. cast frame) with 25 lpi checkering
2) ambidextrous safety (vs. non)
3) Recoil Master system (vs. guide rod)
4) FO front sight (vs. black iron sight)

these advantages come at a price adder. If you intend on making no changes to the gun, the Sentry is the clear winner.

If you intend on the gun as a platform upon which to build, the Trojan May be a better choice (again, the Sentry has a superior frame) as it has a lower entry cost and fewer expensive parts which you may want to swap (I.e ambi safeties and Recoil Master guide rod).

They are both great pistols....I have a 9mm Trojan just coming up on 50,000 documented rounds...just missed it this year.
I have had zero mechanical issues...few broken site tubes, but that's obviously no big deal.
My next one will be a Sentry mainly due to the checkered front strap, and now the forged frame models all have that little extra undercut under the trigger guard that the Trojan has always had.. This little feature means a lot to me as I find 1911's without a high undercut trigger guard won't allow my desired grip..I actually sold a previous Sentry just because of this.
You won't go wrong with any of the STI 1911's...great pistols.
