My 2cents (even though it doesn't exactly answer your original question)?
Reload for real savings. Also, I like that its an extension to the hobby to brings home. There is only so much dry-fire training I can stand. Rather be out shooting. My 9mm reloads cost me approx. 7.75$ x 50rounds. The trick is to always leave with more brass than you came in with and buy when on sale.
If the initial investment cost is a factor (which it should be), Dillon has a
"break even calculator you can use to see how many rounds would it take to break even. I've included screenshots of my spreadsheets (nerd alert!)
This is my break even calculation. Its rounded up a bit to over estimate the costs.
This is the original gear list I was considering to evaluate the initial cost of entry. These prices mostly come from
x-reload.com
As far as space is concerned. I live in an apartment and have a 4'x4' mobile workbench dedicated to reloading.
Time: I usually reload approx 3-400 per session (about 2.5hrs), plus 2-3hrs every 4-6weeks once I run out of clean brass.
As far as commercially available ammunition, I didn't enjoy shooting crafm for 260$ ish. However, it found them to "feel" inconsistent and, this may be odd, smelly. The very noticeable "burnt plastic" smell and puff of smoke was distracting after a few hundred rounds. I though it was just a dirty gun, but no matter how clean I got the gun and was the same situation. I said "feel" inconsistent because unless you are shooting off a rest or bags, most people will pull a shot and call it inconsistent. Non of this is "match grade" and the prices will always reflect that.
I shoot a lot and compared to the cost of the Arena branded reloaded ammo I can buy at my range (made in house), I didn't feel the need to go back.
Also, I just noticed,
Dante Sports in Mtl has a sale on.
Hope that was helpful.
