TWK:confused::confused::confused::confused:I just bought a Browning High Power 9MM. it says to use 9MM luger ammo. Does this ammo come by any other name. I want to get the right ammo in either FMJ or JHP, 115 or 124 grain. Hope someone can help me out

9mm is the most common caliber, but there are several different loadings and cartridge case lengths. The Hi-Power uses the most common form, the 9mm Luger or 9x19mm or 9mm Parabellum. The shape of the bullet can make a difference, and straight plain vanilla 124 grain or 115 grain fully jacketed bullets should be fine. If you want to shoot hollow points, you'll have to experiment to see which it will feed, fire and extract. It's part of the joy of shooting. Good luck and have fun with it.

If the ammo is made in the US to SAAMI specs it'll be labelled 9mm Luger, if it's made in Europe (some Fiocchi and Sellier & Bellot) it'll be marked 9mm Para(bellum) (it'll be slightly hotter - European ammo is loaded to CIP specs) there are some US makers who use just 9mm, and some European brands who use 9x19mm. Surplus stuff could be marked 9mm NATO, or Ammunition, Pistol, 9mm, M882 on the box. Bullet weights range from 95 grain (pretty rare) through 115 and 124 (most common) and up to 147 grain. All factory loads are safe in any 9x19 mm gun that is in good condition. Modern pistols can also shoot +P and +P+ factory loads, but the paper will never know the difference - in fact, there are people who argue that the felon can't tell the difference either.

What is age and make of your Hi-power? Older, hi-powers, military manufacture especially have a tendency to not like hollow points or wad cutters because of the shape of the feed ramp. If this is the case best results will be with RN. Also +P loads are reportedly too hot for the old girls, so just stick with Luger loads. While commercial mkIII's and such are designed to feed hotter loads and steeper bullets.

edit: NFG beat me to it

I got bored so here are some pics.

If you are heading to the the Saskatchewan Mecca, ie: Cabelas in Saskatoon, have fun. They are running a shuttle bus service from their overflow parking lot!

had a great day in Saskatoon. Went to the new Cabelas. Very nice store. they had 90% of what i wanted including lots of 9MM Luger, so I bought 2 ammo cans of it [700 rounds] they did't have the leopold bore sighter I wanted so I went to WSS .They were out too and no 9MM. I was surpised how busy WSS was. Hope it works out for both stores as competition so good. Thanks for all your info uys

Take a look at the feed ramp. Older Hi-Powers had a rounded or "humped" feed ramp that made it difficult to feed HP ammo. Newer models have a straight feed ramp allowing for all ammo types. If you have the former, a competent gunsmith can fix the problem, or you can purchase an aftermarket barrel.
