Anybody know who carries 9mm hollow point or similar defence loads? Every site I've seen is sold out.

Thanks.

There is a thread in the reloading forum and I think the consensus ended up being that you should use factory ammo in a self defense situation for liability sake.

$1 a round?
Why not just reload your own?

As has been noted numerous times, self-defense experts such as Massad Ayoob tell their students to NEVER use handloads for self-defense ammo due to the negative perception that will be painted in court should you have the misfortune to actually need to use your firearm in self-defense.

Urban myth!

Please cite one case (just one) where using reloads in a self defence situation resulted in the shooter being negatively impacted. I'll wager you or anyone else can not.

PS: I was squadded with Mr Ayoob at a major match in Florida several years ago and in my opinion, he's not that skilled a shooter.

Handguns do not have "stopping power" until you step up to the big bores (.44 +)... Even then it's pretty suspect.

The "stopping power" of the handgun is that most criminals won't want to get shot, even with a "low power" 9mm round. Most criminals are lazy... when confronted by someone with the means to defend themselves, they will leave to find easier picking. According to the NRA, most armed self defense situations end without a shot being fired.

The real problem, here in Canada, is that the criminal will probably call the police, and you will be the one charged.

You are wrong on two accounts.

First, Ayoob's claim to fame is not his shooting skill but for his legal testimony in court cases involving firearms.

Second, yes there are cases of handloads being brought up detrimentally in court. A particular one being a suicidal woman whom the husband was convicted of murder, based on GSR. It was determined that due to lack of GSR on her, the husband shot the woman at a distance. The gun had very light target HANDLOADS in it.

Ayoob has won some revolver matches he has shot in. Some people take issue with him that his career in LE was rather minor and short termed.

There was a case in the US where the prosecutor based his whole case around a legitimate defence shooter using a 10mm. He claimed that the 10 was so powerful that the guy just carried it because he wanted to shoot somebody. I recall the victim lost and then won on appeal.

Ayoob has some interesting articles, but like alot of things you have to sift through the good and bad. He has in the past made posts on some internet forums such as AR15 that were interesting.

It makes little difference what you stoke your pistol with. If you have to shoot someone under justifiable conditions the prosecution will use anything they can throw at you. Use handloads? The guy manufactured his own bullets so they were more lethal. Use factory JHP? The guy used ammunition reserved for law enforcement that's specifically designed to kill people. Use FMJ ball? The guy used military-grade ammunition designed to penetrate hard targets and tumble in the body. They're not going to just up and abandon their case because you chose a box of Gold Dots over an XTP and 4.2 gr of Bullseye.

If anyone here is in some serious line of work where your ammunition is not issued to you and end up in the most unenviable position of having to have deployed lethal force, the type of ammunition you used will be the least of your concerns. Use whatever you believe will win you the fight.
