I am fabricating a mag well for a 9mm Chiappa M1 carbine, and I am wondering how best to position the magazine for optimal feed height. It uses Beretta 92 magazines. I'm at the stage of fabrication where I need to install the mag catch that will determine the height of the magazine wrt the action.

Make up some dummy rounds and test?

Somewhere between low enough to not interfere with the bolt, and high enough for the bolt to pick up the cartridge. Dummy rounds will help, but they are no substitute for real testing.

The top round has to be compressed by the closed bolt, otherwise it won't pop up any higher when the bolt opens, and be picked up by the bolt. There really isn't a great deal of distance between the start of that compression, and the top of the mag feed lips rubbing on the bolt.

It might be best to do as you suggest, and finish the mag well, other than locating the magazine catch, take it to the range and try various positions for the mag, mark the best location and then locate and install the catch.

Ready to test it out. It's a touch on the crudely finished side, but it fits in with the rustic look.

In the PCC section on the forums someone mentioned the idea of 3d printing "covers" or similar for the Beretta mags to make them appear more like original M1 carbine mags.... just saying if you end up doing that I would buy a couple :)

That's a cool idea. I'll looking into that. There are certainly 3d printed dummy or prop mags for m1 carbines. Also CAD files for Beretta mags. The two could be combined as a starting point. But, I'm slow as heck at modifying CAD files. I really need to spend more time on it, but other interests get in the way.

Went to the range today and fired 50 shots through it. Not a single misfeed. Used Winchester white box 115 gr brass, and Winchester 115 gr steel "forged" ammo, and both function fine. Used 3 factory mags marked 92-9mm pistol. Trigger sucks though.
