Why exactly is it you can't shoot 9mm in .38super?

How is it different from using .38spl in .357mag gun? bore diameter is the same (.355-.356) and I don't see why the extractor wouldn't work...

what am I missing here?

probably the fact that the 9mm headspaces on the cartridge mouth. The chamber would be longer and it may not chamber properly.

The 38 super is semi rimless and can headspace on the rim or the mouth. At least according to the lyman manual.

The 357 magnum and 38 special are both rimmed designed and headspace from the rim.

also the 38 super has a straight walled case , there's a taper to the 9mm- not exactly visable, but it's there- or so i've been told- anyway, firing the 9 in the 38 super is bad mojo-

Depending on the cut of the chamber, 9x19 may not fit as it's too fat just in front of the extractor groove than the .38 super is at that dimention.

On top of the other issues raised here, gas cutting is a very real possibility. As the chamber is about 4mm longer, and the 9x19 case mouth is likely smaller than the .385 straight cut .38 super chamber, gas leakage is a possibility.
