I'm having a hey of a time finding titegroup. I have a good stash of 231 and would like to try loading it with BDX 124's.

I could use a bit of insight into a load for my Shadow that performs well.

I have read the manuals, just could use a bit of been there done that.

BTDT don't... It'll be dirty.. You can't build enough pressure to make 231 work in a 9mm.. It'll shoot... You can load it and make PF but you won't like the load or the cleanup...

If I'm not mistaken (don't have very much first-hand experience with 231) if you load to around PF140, it'll be fairly clean burning loads.
Also, try 700X, I did some experimenting, the powder is in the same or close burning speed rate, felt recoil is low, no muzzle flash, pretty clean. Powder is on cheaper side and calls for smaller charges too. May not measure as well as ball 231 powder in your setup thou.

This is how you calculate PF:

(V x M) / 1000 = PF

where V - bullet velocity in feet per second; M - weight of the bullet in grains.
To achive PF140 you need 124gr bullet to travel at 1130fps.

I just looked up loading data for 700X at Hodgdon site for 115gr bullet (since I got a load for it), I load plated Frontier bullets:

It lists 3.7gr with velocity of 1082fps for LRN.
I loaded 3.6gr with velocity 1102fps (PF125) and will be going with 3.7-3.8gr to be sure I get required PF regardless of outside temps. IMR is in general temp inverse, meaning higher outside temps reduce your PF.

I was using 4.4-4.8 grains of 231 with a BDX 124gr FMJ at 1.121". Not sure sure what the PF or velocity was but 4.4 was a very light load and was quite dirty. It was much cleaner with 4.8 grains.

I switched to universal as I am also loading 147gr lead.

I load a lead 135 grain round nose (from DRG) at 1.125 coal for a friend with 3.9 of 231 makes 1000 fps out of his CZ75 and about 40 fps faster out of my high power. Cheap and very accurate. somewhat dirty but you CAN clean you gun more than once a year LOL.

Have you tried Scot at Cedar Valley Hunting? cedarvalleyhunting.ca

I bought my supply of titegroup from him.

FYI... I find titegroup does not meter accurately through my Redding.

If you got the $$ Scot has/had Vihtavuori N320... stuff meters very accurately.

Have not tried Scot. Bought some primers off him a while back and he was good to deal with.

I have been reading about the best powder for a 9mm in IPSC and TG seems to get a fair bit of use. I will continue my reshearch and see what are my other options.

Titegroup works very well with the 147. PF of 133 at the Provincials with 3.2 and it felt very soft. I've been working on a load for the 124 but I haven't got it quite right yet. Titegroup might be too fast for the 124. I've been using 4.3 of Accurate # 2 for a PF of 129.

Well if you figure it out share it with me please.

Accurate is probably harder to get than TG.

I used to use No 5 in my 38's and I haven't found that for a long time. I found it to be cleaner than 231 but it was available in the drought.
