Sorry not a thread on really cheap pistol primers :(

I loaded some 124 gr LRN over 4.7 gr of universal clays and while shooting my pistol (a mp 446 Viking)
It wouldn't go into battery. I looked and there was a primer stuck in the chamber.
I removed it and went back to shooting.
It happened again, this time the blown primer was in front of the hammer!!
I stopped shooting, which I should've done in the first place. That was two blown primers out of 82 (out of 100 loaded)
Now I'm new to shooting and even newer to reloading, so go easy on me please.
The brass was a mix of twice fired and range pick up, and my OAL was 1.09 inches give or take a .01.
I used a lee powder loader and visually inspected the charges before loading.

I read up a bit on CGN and the web, not even knowing they were called "blown primers" but the majority of info were for rifle rounds.
I've yet to check my brass..I was firing about three hundred rounds of 9mm, 40 cal and 45. along with 50 rounds of 223. A good range day :)

What do you guys think? Loose primer pockets? bullet seated to far? Heavy charge? I don't think it was the charge I wasn't anyway near to max.

I'll check the 9mm cases after sorting them Sat night. This is kinda making me question reloading, but I find it relaxing and fun. A guy I was talking to at work asked if I reloaded and a said yes with a bunch of pride.

Any thoughts?

dam, that was the first thing that came to mind, cheap primers!!

picture would help, but i have had primers come out when i used aluminum cases on their 5th reloads, but the primers looked normal.

EDIT: i can never figure out how many powders hodgdon makes with clays, universal and universal clays, but for the first 2 powders if you used 4.7 you are over the max charge, but i don't see universal clays listed online or in my manuals for 9mm.

4.7grain of Universal Clays under 124gr bullet? That's kinda too much; in 9mm? No?
4.0gr is about what you want for the bullet.

Once I was shooting my 9mm with reloads and the round didn't go off with repeated trigger pulls, pulled the mag and a primer fell out. I then pulled the round and there was no primer in the loose pocket. I reload with a Lee Loadmaster with a faulty primer system so I just hand prime but sometimes you can feel the primer go in too easy. Most of my brass is range pickup, I just reload once fired brass and toss any that looks beat up or tarnished.

Only loading brass once significantly adds unnecessarily to the cost of shooting (in my opinion anyways). I have 9mill brass that have been reloaded at least a dozen times and a lot of 38 sp. that have been loaded 30 to 50 times or more (been using some of the same brass since I started reloading pistol shells in the early 70's). Over the years Iv'e tossed maybe a dozen or so of the .38's that developed cracks at the mouth and half that many when I feel no resistance to primer seating..

I dug through my spent cases and found a culprit. The head stamp has been completely mashed with bad marks or gouges from the extractor?

As well I noticed some 45 ACP cases with drag marks on the primer.

I looked up the load data on Hodgdon website they do list loads using universal or clays. I chose universal and yep the max load is 4.4 gr.
BULLET WEIGHT124 GR. BERB HBRN TP
ManufacturerHodgdon
PowderUniversal
Bullet Diameter.356"
C.O.L.1.150"
Starting Load
Grains3.8
Velocity (ft/s)904
Pressure26,300 PSI
Maximum Load
Grains4.4
Velocity (ft/s)1,045
Pressure33,500 PSI
But my Sierra reloading manual from 2003 lists universal clays from 4.6 to 5.3 with a OAL of 1.09?

Super confused, surely the gunpowder formulas couldn't have changed so dramatically?
So I guess I'm over charging the cases and probably seating to deep?

I used a lee powder scoop with the 45 rounds. I was using it heaped not level thinking a touch more wouldn't hurt. Well I just measured the heaping scoop and it was 5.4 gr, just under the max load of 5.5!

Things I've learned...get a updated reloading manual and check the loads against other sources, be accurate as hell when it comes to OAL and charges. I think I've been to flippant when it comes to reloading.

Thanks to all who responded.
Cheers,
Dean

i would be accurate as hell with regards to the powder charge, but the OAL should be setup for your gun ideally. start low and work up until you find an accurate load.

after looking at pictures of the gun and what the breech, barrel, and firing pin area looks like, the brass smashed with enough force to flow into the shape of it. consider this to be your lucky warning on being careful about load data and practices.
