If I have 40 S&W gun and 9mm barrel (I do actually) - can 9mm barrel be re-chambered into 357 sig and used in that gun? Don't have reloading book with me, it has all cases sizes.

Thanx beforehand

It is custom made barrel for Beretta chambered in 9mm Luger and Beretta'ss frame from gun chambered in 40S&W. I think it will work but I primarily wanted to know if anything else is involved.

It depends on how much material is there.

If the outside diameter area around the chamber and rifling on the 9mm barrel is the same exact same in size and appearance as the .40S&W barrel... the walls will be thick enough since the .357sig is a bottle-necked .40S&W.

Compare the barrels... if they look the same on the outside you should be good for the .357Sig conversion (you're looking to make sure there isn't large strips of metal removed on the 9mm barrel which would weaken the area and be too thin.)

For instance, I wanted to do this same conversion on the Beretta CX4 Storm with a 9mm barrel, but, the 9mm barrel has sections of metal removed around the chamber for no good reason. The outside diameter is otherwise Identical to the 40S&W barrel everywhere else. Too bad.

.357 Sig is a rather nasty caliber to shoot. It kicks and all the ones I have fired suffer from excessive muzzle jump.

It is not a caliber you want to shoot a couple of hundred rounds of at a time.

If you want a power trip, get a .44 Rem Mag or even just a plain old .357
Actually, my .357 is nastier than my .44 probably due to the weight of the guns.

A consideration is the price of .357 Sig ammo (expensive); or if you reload the scarcity of .357 Sig brass as well as its shorter life before failure. It is a high pressure load and the cases will split sooner than say .40S&W;

But if your heart is set on that caliber, then go for it!

my barrel is custom made with much heavier walls so I am ok to re-chamber. I agree, Bereta's original barrels are way too light and especially with those grooves (weight saving?) around chamber area it would be no good for conversion.

Brass life span, ammo price - who cares. 9mm Luger is pretty anemic cartridge and I am going for SIG.

thanx everybody for excellent info.

I have done this conversion with my glock 22. I used a lone wolf 9mm barrel and had Gunnar @ Armco cut the chamber to 9X40 (357 sig). I have fired well over 5000 rounds and use it for an IPSC standard gun. I load for both major and minor and love this calibre. 9mm bullets are much cheaper to buy for reloading (15% less) and the calibre can be easily loaded to your recoil tastes. 357 sig factory ammo can be a little hard to find and will usually sell at a premium over either 9mm or 40 s&w.
