9mm small game and varmint bullet

Keep in mind that a 9mm is making a bigger hole without expansion than a .22 does all mushroomed out so really any bullet should do the job quite effectively. I would probably use a 115gr just to get higher velocity and more hydrostatic shock value as it's passing through though.
Not sure of the wildlife regs where the OP is situated but out here you are not allowed to use FMJ for hunting.
I thought that applied to big game only. Not small game/pests? . I only use shotgun for small game/pests so I am ignorant.

Grouse go down like bowling pins with a FMJ. Never shot a rabbit with a 9mm so I can't comment on that.I would imagine the JHP rounds would make a mess. Usually with rabbits you either hit a vital or loose it. I would try FMJ for everything except coyotes and maybe fox.
I didn't chronograph any but factory loads 115 gr American Eagle are getting 6-8" penetration in the sandy dirt back drop
I use tmj in my 22 mag with great success so I'm sure the fmj would be fine for edible game but I will be calling coyotes and wolves in timbered areas so the idea of one load for everything appeals to me. Fmj is legal here for hunting in my area but an expanding bullet for dogs seems more appropriate
My 25/06 is awesome for coyotes and wolves but is hell on hides at 15-40 yards
My 22 mag has never had an issue dropping a coyote at such ranges usually over frozen creeks so I'm sure a projectile almost 4 times the mass should do the trick and with the Jrc give me quick follow up shots for when more then one emerge
It will also give me a better chance should I encounter a problem bear while small game hunting or berry picking. A 22 or 17 doesn't give me much comfort other than a club

So load a heavy cast bullet with the biggest flat point you can find and load it to about the 1100 FPS level...
OP is from Ontario; Ontario has no regulation concerning type of bullet used. OP, are you north of that imaginary line that limits to 270 or smaller? (its actually listed as .275 I believe). If so your JR 9mm fits the bill; if you're south of that line your rifle is "too big".
I cast 147 for my JR 9mm all the time, because I'm too cheap to buy factory ammo ,doesn't seem to have a problem with them ( I have about 2000 rounds of reloaded , case bullets down the tube).... Just clean your JR and everything will work great. I've used the cheap's shotgun powder I could find...and yep, still worked great. It'll dirty up the blow back gun really fast,but that's the price you pay for cheap powder.
I uses the lee 147 round nose molds, with WW.
There might ,have been a problem with these rifle, when they first come out...but my JR 9mm will eat just about anything. And yes they say don't use lead, or reloads in them, most of the time it's just to protect there rear ends...just in case someone does a double powder load or something like that, or seat the bullet too low in the case..etc.

Good to know about the cast working well. I shot wolf lead reloads thru my 1911 and spent hours cleaning the lead out so when I read the warning I thought to myself the higher price for jacketed is worth more than the time spent scrubbing and swearing lol

Whats even stupider (if that's a word) is that I can target shoot with .308 all day long on the farm but if a coyote runs by I have to grab my .223
308 is small. I target shoot with my 458 and 300 wm but yes its stupid
Stamp a barrel 275 Rigby and you can use a 7 mm though
Pistol caliber carbines are perfect for swo small wood lots. For most of my coyote calling and hunting a 9x19 would be ideal. I do hunt over some larger fields where my 25/06 shines but most are shot at under 40 yards as I try to space myself out when using the 25. A 75 gr Vmax at 15 yards into a coyotes chest at 3500 fps makes a mess
