Hello all, I've got a question for the collective.

I'm looking at getting a Pistol and I have already picked out a .22LR that I like and I thought it would be the only one I was allowed to get. But I have been informed that I can get a second one in a caliber of my choosing so I'm thinking either a 9mm because the ammo is the most affordable of all the calibers other than the .22, but at my local gun store they have a Beretta 96A1 which is 40S&W and they don't have a 92A1. so if I went with 9mm I would be looking at the smith and wesson M&P 9 or a glock.

I tend to like variety so being that my 22 that I picked out is the M&P22 I would like to think of the M&P9 as a second choice and so I would like to get the Beretta but I'm wondering if the recoil of the 40S&W is going to be too much.

What do you guys think any of you shot both and have some observations you would like to share?

40 S&W has more recoil than a 9mm. There are tons of sponsors on CGN that will have what you want. I strongly suggest a 9mm CZ75 or Shadow as a great first centerfire gun, starting at about $650. If you are looking for a polymer 9mm, they are as common as dirt in the EE or at a sponsor.

CRAFM has a CZ Shadow for $739.

If you are buying the M&P 22 why not stick to that platform. If you do the 9mm would be the caliber to get. Much cheaper to shoot, less recoil and if you decide to play IDPA ir IPSC the 9MM is more versatile. As others have said the guns are available from any number of our sponsors and are on the EE all the time. Good buys are out there. It pays to shop around.

As mentioned, 40 s&w has more recoil than 9mm.
.40 cal is usually described as a "snappy" round, and that will make perfect sense to you the first time you pull the trigger on one.

It sounds like you're just starting out with pistols, and I'd say 9mm all the way. You'll get better faster.

The M&P9 is a great gun. I'm a Glock fanboy, so that's what I shoot the most. They are the 2 most popular striker fired pistols because of their cost, reliability, and accuracy. You can't go wrong with either pistol, unless you prefer DA/SA.

Good choice on the M&P 22. I bring mine to the range every time I go. It's great for a warmup and to focus on your fundamentals.
I personally shoot my .22 better than my g19(9mm), and I shoot my g19 better than my buddy's g22(.40).
