Hi all. I'm looking at picking up a 10/22 really soon. I'm going for the stainless steel model but haven't really decided on whether I want the wood/laminate stock or the synthetic stock. I'd eventually like to buy a thumbhole stock for it but I don't know of a good place in Canada to buy them. I'll also be buying a bull/target barrel in the near future.

Can I replace the factory barrel with a bull/target barrel and still use the factory stock or do I have to also upgrade my stock? Any recommendations on some cheap upgrades I can do right away to it without breaking the bank? Its really just going to be a gopher gun.

If you get the wood stock and are handy with tools you can rework the original stock to take the larger barrel. have a look at the boydboys web site. I think they are in California but they have many types of stocks in a variety of finishes and states of finish. I've not heard of any trouble getting them to Canada!!

I picked up a Ruger 10/22 40th Anniversary Edition a year and a half ago. Last summer my basement flooded and damaged the stock on it. Insurance reimbursed me and I ordered a Ross Thumbhole in Nutmeg from Boyd's for it and a JRS in Pepper for a pre-64 M70 as well. If the total value is less than $100 CAD you can have them shipped directly to you and you pay the customs and brokerage at the Post Office. If they are over $100 bucks (as the two stocks were together) it's easiest if you either use a broker or get someone to bring them across the border for you. I contacted Rick at Alberta Tactical in Calgary who has a shop on the south side of the 49th as well and for a nominal fee (I can't remember exactly how much) he brought them back across and shipped them to me. I have to say that I love the look and feel of the thumbhole stock. Last fall I took a grouse at 50 yards in the head offhand. I haven't put a heavy barrel on it either. Here's a picture:

You know you may not need to go all wild for a gopher gun, but a standard carbine would be greatly enhanced with.

Bolt buffer (smoothes out the action )
VQ target hammer (drops trigger pull from 7-8 lbs to ~2.5 A "must do")
One hand bolt release (nice to have could just as easily be skipped)
Extended mag release (makes it easier to drop the mags)

Anytime I've tried to order anything from the States, there is a problem. I just ordered a Boyd's thumbhole stock (10/22 blaster) with the EB shaw helical fluted barrel. I also had to order from Rick at Alberta Tactical in Calgary. It's an extra 10 percent.
I'm considering trying to get an importer licence to avoid these problems.

Ok im gonna make this quick, hopefully I don't leave out to much info...

1.Get yourself a standard 10/22 carabine,

2.First thing you want to do is go out and shoot some crap. lots of crap.

3.Then when you want to drop a couple bucks into your rifle, get a bolt buffer, make yourself an auto bolt release (tips and tricks), make or buy an extended mag release, and get yourself an aftermarket hammer (and sear... optional) I recommend a Rimfire Technologies (by Skeeter) Deluxe Trigger Kit... it is the finest trigger (beside's a kidd) out there.

4. Your next move should be a bullbarrel (best quality/price = Green Mountain)... to install your barrel in your factory stock, simply give a monkey some sandpaper and a wooden dowel or a socket from a ratchet set and tell him to sand out the barrel channel until your barrel fits, you might want to leave a little room between the barrel and stock (about the thickness of a dollar bill) this is what we call a free floating barrel.

5. Eventually when funds allow and you want a purrrrty thumbhole laminate contact barry at bitsofpiece's and he can hook you up with a revival stock (same as boyd's but less of a hassel to get your hands on it).... personally if you want a gopher slayer I would recommend a light sythetic stock, a Hogue OM comes to mind.

6. Finally, if you take the time to ask a couple questions along the way and read the 10/22 tips n tricks section you should end up with a Damn fine rifle.

7. Dont forget about accessories such as a decent scope (w/ AO), a couple of 25round steel lips magazine's, maybe a bi-pod ...ect

Can a heavy Barrel fit on the synthetic stock with some work? Or does one need a new stock?

I am not gunsmith and appoligise if this is a dumb a$$ question

Thanks for the tips! Well, when I posted that I was going to buy one really soon, I guess that meant about 2 hours later :)

I picked up one with the synthetic stock and the SS receiver. I really liked the synthetic and figured that if I can't afford to upgrade the stock & barrel later and least I'll still have a rifle I like :)

I've been reading a lot of posts here in the rimfire forum but to be honest there is so much that I got a little confused and lost and forgot some of what I read. Should I clean this rifle before I shoot it? I remember reading some posts (can't remember where) about breaking in the barrel...do I really have to worry about that?

Also, when you say "a decent scope (w/ AO)" does the AO mean adjustable optics? I'm just gonna pull my scope off my Viper and put it on the Ruger. Its pretty basic, not too fancy, but it saves me from having to buy another right now :)

Synthetic has the same sized barrel channel as the wood stock. I suppose it could be opened out.
If you get a stainless, then eventually rebarrel and restock it, you will have a silver finished alloy receiver and trigger guard. The barrel is the only major stainless part in the rifle. Unless you really want the silver finish, a standard 10/22 will do just as well.
A/O = adjustable objective. The scope can be adjusted for the actual range, rather than just using a fixed, average setting.

The best way to break in a rimfire barrel is to blast lotsa gophers. Most people I know, self included found the 10-22 performs much better after spitting out it's first brick.

10/22

bought a stainless 10/22 less than a year ago and have been looking at a few changes-cant believe the stuff you can get for these. was at the kamloops show and saw several tables with lotsa goodies on them for this .22

what do you mean shoots a bit clunky? I imagine the clunky sound you are hearing is from the bolt smacking on the bolt stop pin.

A simple fix: install a 6$ bolt buffer.

that will be the first thing for sure-been on the buffer site and a buddy has had one for 20years now and changed lots.new hammer too and clip release.
who sells the Volq trigger kits? Russells has some of the parts but there is supposed to be a trigger kit for abour $100 or so. Russells carries the Power Custom stuff but I am told to get the Volq stuff. suggestions?

FWIW... I recommend either the PC 10/22 Adjustable Hammer/Sear Pack or better yet Rimfire Technologies (by Skeeter) Deluxe Trigger Kit from:

or

Did I mention free shipping to Canada!!!
you can also get your bolt buffer and takedown screw from BcBoy (cgn member)

Well I took it out shooting lastnight and put about 100-200 rounds through her. Had one stove pipe and a few FTEs and FTFs but from what I've read here and at rimefirecentral that seems to be normal for the new rugers.

What would be a good $100 or less scope for it?

I would say a bushnell 3-12X40 AO

I have one on my gopher gun:

-trigger tuning done by myself(change engagement angle, and polish)
