a 22 weird poblem

i have this little 22 scoped out cooey model 39 ...i bought it for my grandson to play with.
its rated for both long rifle or short rifle ammo..
but for some reason,with using the long rifle shells..i get the odd splatter of what i will call.... gun powder back splash..
its like you get a bit of a spray of wind from the reciever..as soon as you pull the trigger..
any ideas on this??

The headspace is too much. I had the same on my Lakefield .22. I took it to a gunsmith and he adjusted it and it shoots absolutely fine now. cost me $20.00

Likely excessive headspace, I've seen quite a few that will do that.....
