A $500 budget for a .223 varmint gun~what would you buy?

Steven 200. Don't get the package. Spend the other 250 on a decent scope. As others have said for the range you are working nothing over 15 power. Better to spend on a better 3-9 than on a cheap 20x.

Then you can upgrade the stevens like I did.

New Shillen .223 match stainless barrel
Falcon Menace 4.5-14.

I can make hits at 450 yards. If I get my adjustments correct. The wind becomes a factor beyond that. But that is what a 6.5x55 or .338 Edge are for.

Hey guys, thanks SO much for the responses so far. This really is an excellent community. I've posted a photo from this past Saturday, took this fat groundhog with the HMR in borderline-too-long hay at almost 150 yards. The longest kill shot I've made with this rifle, and I planted him behind the right ear. The 3200 on that CZ is a 12x power so I wanted to comment on the power suggestions made so far. I don't find the 12x to be nearly enough at that range but on the other hand, I have "over scoped" rifles back when I thought more magnification=better. This thread is proof that it's very subjective, but my hunch is that a minimum 18x would be about right on small targets out to 200-250 yards...no? At 12x, that grounhog's noodle looks pretty small over 100 yards to me...but maybe my expectations are skewed. I also know that I'm really keen on NOT having parallax problems, something I encountered on a really high magnification scope once. I've done some reading on all the suggestions here, and all the scopes mentioned certainly have their followings. Right now, leaning towards the Nikon Buckmaster. I think mildot would suit my needs best, side focus, etc.

The Bushnell 4200 series is pretty good glass for the price. I have done side by side comparisons with older generation Leupold VariX III and the Bushnell was better at higher magnifications and the Leupold better at low magnifications.

I have bought two 4200 on here in the last year.
The first is a 4200 6-24x40 side focus that sits on my Rem 700 LVSF in .204 Ruger.
Love it. I paid 400.00 for it shipped. Clear, SF is nice, Compact in size for a high powered scope with AO.
The other 4200 I bought on here is a 4-16x40 Side Focus. it sits on My Tikka Model 55 in .22-250. great optcs for the money. If you keep your computer on and your eyes open you can find great optics for a little more than 1/2 the price of store bought.
Another model i would consider is the Weaver grand Slam...

Hope this helps. Good luck with your shopping. Hey! the shopping part is half the fun..LOL!
