I finally got my rifle assembled enough to take it to the range to try it out. As you can tell the stock is not finished as of yet but it is bedded. I have a Shilen Comp trigger coming on it as the one on it now is a Shilen Standard trigger.

Rifle: Pierce Single Shot action, Shilen Select Match barrel (8 twist), Wildcat Composites stock, SII 36X Scope.

Here are the targets shot to date:

This is rounds 3, 4 and 5 through the barrel. After the first two, it was sighted in close enough to try a group

Untitled-2.jpg

The left group is shots 6,7 and 8 with the rifle held against my shoulder.

The right group is shots 9,10 and 11 with no shoulder contact and as little hand contact as I could manage

This is my first 5 shot group.

All loads were the same. It was the first powder charge amount, the first bullet choice and first guessed seating depth I tried (do not have a modified case made yet)

Pretty pleased. The first 3 groups are 3 shots and they are all at 100 yards but I think that will be a great gun for me to learn on!

go for some 105 hybrids in that 8 twist. 30 grains of varget with an 80 grain is a very light load. most 105,7,8's are pushed with anything from 30 - 31.5,

True that the 80 grain is not optimal for the 8 twist, and that is a fairly light load, but for 100 yards I do not need the higher BC and the extra velocity isn't required either. I only have easy access to a 100, soon to be 200 yard range so until I need further, this bullet will serve me for learning.

I will try neck sized formed brass loads after and see if that makes a difference but it is shooting in the mid to low 2's as it is. And thats better than I ever thought I could shoot! :)

stick with minimal neck tension... 1 or 2 thou. It is a good shooter and you picked my favorite cartridge in the world. have fun and good to see someone pulling the trigger to learn how to do it right!
