I refinished my fathers Remmy 1100. Couldn't pass up the chance to practice doing the gold inlay. The r isn't half done..it's the reflection that made it look like that.

nice work..could you describe the procedure and etch materials used?
remingtonsteele.
Thanks. The finish I'm using is gunkote. The colors are gun blue and satin brass.
Here is a step by step of the procedure.
1. strip gun

2. preheat parts to bring any oil, grease to the surface and out of any holes, etc.

3. Let it cool and remove grease, oil with solvent.

4. Remove old finish using 120 grit aluminum oxide (blasting media) at 40 psi.

5. Clean parts again using solvent. We use a product called gun wash. It's for cleaning paint spray guns.

6. Preheat the parts to approx 125 degrees. This does two things.
Open's the "pores" of the metal so the finish gets "in" the metal.
It prevents the finish from running as it has the same viscosity as water!

7. Next spray the base coat using an air brush at 20 psi +/-.

8 Bake at 325 degrees for an hour. Baking it longer increases the wearability of the finish but might cause it to come out a different shade then the sample. (we haven't encountered this yet with gun blue).

9. Next either let the part you want to do the inlay on cool down to 125 degrees or after it cools down heat it back up to 125 degrees and spray the parts or area you want in brass.

10. Let it air dry for 30 minutes or so. Then take a rag with solvent on it (not dripping wet) and rub the over spray off the part / area you did in brass.

11. Bake the part again at 325 for an hour.

Doing the inlay doubles the time it takes to refinish the gun. I think it adds a nice touch to certain rifles, shotguns. We've done a couple of rifles for people and did the name (Sako, Remington) in brass. They turned out nice.
However we had a guy want us to do the receiver and mag tube on a Sears .22 semi in brass and the barrel in blue.
We convinced him to do the trigger, knob on the ram for the mag and the charging handle in brass. It looked much better IMHO.
