a bit of rust on the shotgun What do I do about it?

I had the exact same problem on my Mossberg barrel they seem to be very prone to rust. I scrubbed mine with a paper towel and Hoppes #9 for quite a while and that seemed to get most of it. Ever since that first happened I have kept all my guns with a coat of gun oil on them and that has prevented any more rust. If you can get a large quantity of desicant and place it in your safe that is supposed to help was well. For me just using oil has worked and the relative humidity here on the island is really high.

Your gun has had it and it is probably unsafe to shoot. Lucky for you I am in the market for such a shotgun and have a nice crisp $50 bill to provide ample for payment and express shipping.

But seriously, soak it with some G96, leave it sit for a few minutes and rub it with a soft cloth. If the bluing goes, it goes. Touch it up with a bluing pen or like thing and that should cover the marks.

And, to amplify on the 0000 steel wool recomendation, there is quality steel wool and there isn't. The commonly available wool in the green/red package is pretty poor stuff compared to the Liberon brand that Lee Valley Tools sells.
If you compare the two you would never believe they are sized identically. Liberon is consistent in strand size while the other looks like it is a blend incuding 00 and 000. Use liberal amounts of oil with the Liberon and rub lightly until rust is gone. You have to bear down hard to actually see noticeable affect on the bluing itself.

"...commonly available wool..." It'll do nicely. 0000 grade and some oil takes off light rust with no damage to the rest of the finish. You don't need anything special.

Just as a matter of interest, i did an unscientific test on G96, Rem oil and Breakfree CLP, to check corrosion resistence. I cleaned mild steel coated three sections with the above gun oils, then wiped the oil off with scott towel and then wiped with salt water.

Rem Oil came in first, followed closely by G96 and Breakfree was a distant #3
