My 22-year-old A-Bolt Hunter in .280 Rem has been a very accurate and serviceable rifle for me, but I have never really liked the stock. I find the rifle recoils more than any other .280 I've shot. I can shoot sub-MOA groups easily from the bench, but in other field positions, accuracy goes to hell real fast, and I suspect that is due to muzzle lift. I do like everything else about the rifle so I've kept it as my go-to since buying it in 1992.
I'm interested in getting a new stock for it, and I want something that is checkered and has a cheekpiece and a decent recoil pad. Wood, laminate or glass would all be considered. I just don't really know what's out there and what others may have tried.

Take a look at Boyds - they are a US company but will ship to Canada (up to 500 bucks with nothing special needed).

Their stocks are wood (walnut or maple options) or wood laminate and you can customize them (checkering, different recoil pad, grips etc) as much as you want - the price does rise of course.

I have one of their stocks on a Weatherby and a Savage and like them a lot.

Worth a look

Great, I thought the limit was $100.00 for Boyd's stocks. Worth considering. They have one that reminds me of the shape of the Win 70 fwt, a stock I really like a lot.
BTW, I am also a retired Air Force guy, armourer from 1987 to 2000, photo tech 2000 to 2009.

The wood laminate stock that Browning put on their A Bolt Eclipse Hunter model is one of the most comfortable stocks I have ever shouldered. I have one on a 30-06 Sprg. IMO the satin grey laminate finish also looks real nice. It has deep checkering, is very solid, has a comfortable thumbhole grip, good cheekpiece and recoil pad. A while back I asked Browning who manufactured those stocks, they would only tell me that they are "proprietary". I don't know if Browning has them available but you might want to communicate with them and find out.

I had two A bolts that I put Boyd's Prairie Hunter stocks on, one on a 300wm and the other on a 270wsm, I found a marked improvement in off hand accuracy both also had the optional limb saver recoil pad.

I don't think the thumbhole style is available for the a-bolts or that would be my number one choice. The prairie hunter looks great as well and am thinking about ordering one.

Most of the stocks start out around 100 bucks. I got one checkered, changed the length of pull and butt pad and had a deer head lasered into the butt stock. By the time shipping was added, difference in the buck etc it came in just a hair under 300 bucks (Canadian) to my door.

The price looks uber-cheap until you start "adding" things.

And here's the piece about international shipping "Canada (Product value limit increased to $500.00 without export licensing)"

I'm considering either a Prairie Hunter or Classic in walnut or laminate with wraparound checkering, grip and forend caps and a Decelerator pad. If that comes in under 500 skins I'll go for it, I think. I find their website awkward to use; I can only find the base price of the stock and not the price with options.

Bell & Carlson make a Medalist stock for the A-Bolt but it looks like they are only checkered in black, the cool colours are uncheckered, and I specifically prefer forends with wraparound checkering. That's one reason I like the Ruger Hawkeye, Rem 700 CDL and Win 70 Featherweight stocks so much.

I just ordered a platinum in forest camo laminate with full wrap strippling and a regular recoil pad for a vanguard. Grand total with shipping was 206USD$. You will be around 250$ plus exchange

Kilo....quite a few years ago, I called Boyds to ask about the 100 dollar limit coming into Canada...they told me then, that the limit was for the base price only. As long as the stock only totalled 100.00 or less BEFORE shipping and other charges were added to it, ...they could ship it. Soooo...I ordered it...it came....been doin it ever since. Most instances...to my door for under 150.00 US.

Actually, I just got another stock from them last Friday for a friend of mine...initial price was 99.00....two custom options,( black angled polymer tip / white line spacer kit ) and shipping put the total to 222.00 delivered (( so we thought )) US / Canadian dollar is 128.5 !!! annnnd CBSA was nice enough to charge me another 43.00....(10 for shipping and handling and 33.00 HST)...even tho the box says...UNOPENED !! so now the total was 265.00 to the door. They're a great bunch to deal with...they'll bend over backwards to help you out, or make something right.

Still all in all... Awful nice to see the dollar levels increased tho...now we can add extras and be safe.

I'm going to call and order; I just have to choose between classic and Platinum, so I want to speak to a rep regarding the forend: Classic is flat-oval, platinum is rounder. My favourite forends are the Win 70 FWT, Ruger Hawkeye and Rem BDL or CDL, which I think are more round, so likely the Platinum.
I want a nice walnut stock with forend cap and grip cap, fleur-de-lis checkering and a Decelerator pad. If I can do it for under $500.00, I may splurge on a wood upgrade. $500.00 is what I paid for this rifle brand new, but I've gotten two decades of hunting enjoyment out of it, so why not? Then I can enjoy two MORE decades!
